Marine Throws Puppy off cliff

In this article it appears that a Marine threw a puppy off a cliff. There is a question as to whether the puppy was already dead or not, but I still find it hard to think someone would do this to a puppy.

Please read the article and answer a couple of questions I have.

I understand that the Marines for the most part are honorable people, so I am NOT blaming the marines, but a question comes to mind...

With the war going on, and the need for more soliders, does the lower standards and the people that are put through on a "pass" that shouldn't have been in the military, do you think this is a cause for this type of action?

This is for anyone that has been in battle... Does it affect your mind where you could/would do things that you wouldn't normally do? I understand you wouldn't normally kill people. but in the military that is in part your job, but what about acts like this?

I see things like this and try ti wrap my mine around it and wonder why people do it.

I served between '79, & '83. And I don't want to sound like an arrogant slob, but there were guys in the service that I knew well, that suprised me every time they managed to tie their own shoes. You will meet every intelligence level, in the service, including folks who absolutely astound you with their brilliance.

You will also meet the miscreants who think lighting a cat on fire to watch it run is a good time. At least I did.

If that video is real and not some kind of prank, wouldnt that marine be brought up on some kind of charges? I mean his picture is now all over the internet and I am sure his superiors may know about this by now. War situation or not that is not conduct becoming of our military. We should be above that senseless, nefarious cruelty. What we should do is everyone send this video to their congressperson and senator and get this nut out of our armed service.

I guess there is all kinds in the military... or everywhere for that matter.

I think they are looking into it, and I am sure he will pay his dues, at least that is my hope!

I think you're right about sending it or an email to our congressmen. I definiately think this type of stuff has to be nipped in the bud.

No. The American military is, always has been, and hopefully always will be, a reflection of american society in general.

Yes, I saw the video, too, and I'm sad to say, it's not the most shocking video I've seen come out of this war. It seems everyone over there has some kind of video camera or phone, and I've seen soldiers talk about a lot of things that send a cold chill down my spine. Some way too graphic to post here. One I can say is a soldier who shot a man who failed to stop. Turns out he was just a fisherman out by the lake that day. The chilling part was the way this young marine reported the incident, just the facts, blank faced. That marine is now in the U.S., a severe alcoholic due to Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. I don't know how to "fix" that. I am in shock, but not suprised, and that is sad in and of itself.

Thanks for sharing the link Jamie. I am sure that if this is as it appears the Marine in question will pay with his career. There are all kinds of people in the military and there are all kinds of stupid in the world.

You asked about the effect of the battle experience on your mind and life afterwards. I am no expert, but I served from 88 to 92 and fought in the first gulf war. We saw some pretty intense stuff and it does stay with you but I think the after affects have as much to do with the mental health of the individual before they go to war as the wartime experience itself. Some people are just nuts to start with. You would not expect battle to cure them would you? I believe that combat does not so much change who you are as much as it reveals who you are. It strips away so much of the facades we build up around ourselves that you see what you really are, and for many people that is a scary thing. For someone with sound mental health and a real relationship with Christ, you can deal with it just like you would any other unpleasant experience.

By the time you get to be our age Jamie (I checked, we are close enough) you have seen death up close more than once or twice. Its tough, but we learn to go on, its just part of growing up.

Now as far as the dog specifically, I can see where if this Marine was in Iraq with me he might be a little more cold hearted when it comes to dogs than the average guy off the street. When I was in Iraq we killed thousands of men. In the days after the cease fire (if you remember we only had 4 days of real shooting) we tried to dispose of the bodies as quickly and cleanly as possible. The first day or two we were putting them in body bags and burying them in individual graves. But after two days in the sun they were swelling up pretty good and limbs were coming off. By then we had to mass grave many of them. The thing is from day one the scavengers of the deserts came up to feed on the bodies. The seagulls came first and pecked out the eyes and ate any exposed flesh, usually the faces and hands. But by day two the dogs were out in force. I have shot several dogs that were feeding on the dead bodies of Iraqi soldiers. I don’t look at dogs or seagulls like I did before that. I know what God was talking about in Ezekiel 39:3-4. Yea I might be a little colder than some people. You soft hearts that think you would never hurt the poor little puppy, you wait until you see that puppy pull his head out of a man's torso while he eats his entrails (for some reasone they go for the guts before the meat, I don't know why). Yea, you'll kill a puppy too.

Dogs are nothing more than another non-human that God created, regardless of how much little Rover "loves" you, or you him!!!

All are carniviorous beings that just have an affinity for humans that allows us/them to relate to each other better than the majority of the animal world - but still just animals none-the-less.

The "Dog Whisperer" has it right that too many put the dog (pet) in the status of a child, and it just ain't so.

Still when dispatch is needed, it must be done humanely, as the dog has no idea that it has committed some gross act that we deem repulsive.

Moralizing its actions is our problem, not the animal's.

Why does everything have to end with Bush with you? Don't get me wrong, I don't like him, don't like the war and a ton of other things.. but I can't and don't see the need to post it in EVERY thread and post I respond to.

Your point is a vaild one, and one to be considered, but I believe in my opinion you lose creditable when you "throw Bush in for good fun".

I understand that a dog is just a dog... An animal no more or less than any other... but let me ask you something. If a resturant opened and their main course was dog, do you think the town poeple would complain about it? Please don't joke and say they wouldn't eat it or the resturant wouldn't make it because no one would eat a dog. Answer in an honest way.

I believe this example shows that although a dog in nothing more or less than an animal God created, since it's become a part of the families of many many people, it's treatment is different for a very good reason.

How many Deer do you hear about saving a family when their house was on fire? How many crickets does it take to guard your home? How many worms would it take to shepherd the sheep in from the fields?

This puppy did nothing wrong that we are aware of. This marine picked it up and threw it over a cliff. Just another animal or not, that was and is wrong.

Without knowing who is concerned or is not for this puppy vers who is or is not concerned about abortion, you can't make that blanket statement in my opinion.

People care about many things differently. Some of us actually care about both equally.

No excuse whatsoever for that behavior. I served in the early 70s, in all types of different arenas, and there is no excuse. This type of mindset is anywhere you go, whether in the military, school, or work. People are people, and a certain amount of them should have never been born.

These are the type of people who, one day, left unchecked, become murderers and whatever else the mind can think of.

I hope the Marine authorities track these people down, and not only take their careers, but they are in Levenworth, for say 10 years.

And if one is going to do that, what kind of idiot puts it on the internet. I guess the same idiot that did it in the first place.

The biggest thing to me guys, and I am assuming of course that everything is as it looks, but the biggest thing is that this Marine's military career is over. If he will do this with a dog how can we trust him to safeguard prisoners or refuges in a wartime environment. I don't know that he needs jail time but he needs to be kicked out under other than honorable circumstances so that he will never be put in a position of power over another human being. This is not a guy we want to have a second career as say a police or corrections officer.
