In reading this genealogy, verse 17 stuck out at me...

17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.

What is the significance of "14 generations"? Can this have any bearing on Christ's return?

Well....I'm not sure about Christ's return, but if you have never seen this before, you are on to something that will blow you away. Matt genealogy is deeper than just generations. There is a lot of theology in there. To much to write....

If I had a place to send a MP3 file, I would send you something that would keep you busy studying for a week or two.

Nice underhanded insult. That is not the first time I have seen it before, and if you had read the OP correctly I was merely focusing on the 14 generations between each genealogy of those mentioned, not Christ's genealogy.

Let me start over. There is a lot in the 14 generations. Like...The arrangement of the book of Matthew is divided into 14 episodes that corresponds to the genealogy found in Matthew.....and other stuff like that. No big deal

Some find significance in the number "14" as it adds up to the name "David". That is speculation, but it sounds cool, especially in light of Matt. 1:1

Here's the question: Do the 42 generations mentioned in Matthew eliminate the argument that the genealogies in the scriptures skip generations? And that the term "son of" may be interpreted "descendant of?"

Young-earthers appeal to the 42 generations, while old-earthers (read evolutionists) appeal to the skipped generations, I think.

You may be onto something here. Take a look at this passage from Daniel chapter 5:

1 Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.

2 Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein

That which I bolded; I have read from more than one person, that Belshazzar was really Nebuchadnezzar's grandson, and not son. Has anyone else read about this. So what you just posted, might have some credence.
