Anyone else attending Maundy Thursday services at their Baptist church this evening?

I always look forward to it and the Good Friday services.

Tonight we will hear about the new commandment Jesus gave to His followers (John 13:34) and celebrate communion with Christ and each other.

As we believe He was already in the tomb on Thursday, we don't celebrate what is essentially a Roman Catholic liturgical holiday. :)

Although I disagree regarding the importance of the day if is celebrated, do you have objections to commemorating the Last Supper as a church body on a special night?

Truthfully, I've only been to a Maundy Thursday service in a Baptist church twice. The first time was a moving re-creation of the Last Supper with the choir singing.

No, I don't have a problem with such a service (although I think, to be accurate, it should include feet washing;)) just as I have no problem with Baptists who choose not to. I am willing to make Holy Week concessions to the liturgical calendar, but I don't intend to move beyond that.

To be perfectly consistent with our Baptist forbears, we really should jettison both Christmas and Easter from the church calendar. I know some of the board have done just that, and I have no problem with their decisions either.

I would only hope that if a church adopts Holy Week services it would not in effect make such observances mandatory, i.e., those who do not want to attend a Thursday or Friday service to partake of the Lord's Supper should have the opportunity on the traditional Baptist day — the Lord's Day.

Personally, I missed having these services. We used to hold foot washing prior to communion on that night. Some don't think of foot washing as one of the church ordinances, but I always loved the act, as it was HUMBLING, and brought all of us who participated, closer to each other as well as Him.
