I may not be on active military duty, but if I were recalled today, I would be able to skip the barber shop for my inprocessing!!

At least the Army gets it right

Hmmm, believe Jesus had long hair.

Also, it depends on what culture you are in as to how men's hair is viewed.

Also, didn't John the Baptist have long hair?

I think he did-- the same as Samuel and Samson, the trio of "Nazarites from the womb," because in all 3 cases he was prophesied and the mother warned not to drink "wine or strong drink" while pregnant, and he must never so much as touch a grape his entire life; nor a dead body. So although it's not specifically mentioned in the case of JtB about never putting a razor to his head, I assume that was also the same as for S & S.

Actually, "long" is a variable term. According to the Marines, the Army has long hair.

If you look at the Beetles back in 1963, they had short hair, compared to what they wore 10 years later.
As far as Jesus having long hair, we don't know - we only have pictures, by men who never saw Jesus.

The pictures of Jesus - all of which were painted long after He went back to heaven - show him with long hair. We really do not know.

BUT, Jesus was most certainly never took the vow of the Nazarite. He touched dead bodies as when he took the dead girl's hand and raised her up when he reaised her from the dead. He drank juice made from grapes during the Passover and when He instituted the Lord's Supper. He was from Nazareth.

I think the intent of the scripture is that a man is supposed to look like a man and a woman is supposed to look like a woman. I've seen women with very short hair who looked like a woman (no doubt about it). It wasn't about the hair length. It was about how the hair was worn. It's the same for a man. Long hair is not wrong on him unless he's doing it up to look like a woman.

how do you biblically determine if hair is too long, or short(for women), whats the biblicals tandard for determining this?

I haven't had my hair cut in months, and it's nearly down to my shoulders. It's also naturally curly and would be longer if it was straight. The main problem I have with having curly hair is that it is unmanageable and attracts the wrong kind of people (strange guys).

 You hairytic!

I've had short hair, long hair, and everything in between. I haven't noticed that my hair length helped me to be one bit more righteous.

You have been looking at to many 14th century pictures. Not a good place to get your theology. But not surprising.

Scripture also doesn't tell us what "long" is. It just says that nature teaches us that it it a shame for man to have long hair. To some people, hair longer than a Marine hair cut on a man is too long. I see women with hair almost that short and think they look ridiculous. I have a female neighbor whose hair is a LOT shorter than mine.

So, how do we determine what scripture we live by and what scripture we don't live by? We don't stone people any longer. We don't sacrifice animals for sin. We no longer need a priest to pray for us; we can do that ourselves. We no longer have to concern ourselves with what materials we wear together in the same clothing article or what foods we eat for fear of disobeying a law.

Of course, the scripture about long hair is in the New Testament, but much of the customs in the NT are old fashioned and outdated. I could be wrong as usual, but I don't believe that God is going to condemn a man for having long hair. I saw a guy at Walmart today with hair halfway down his back. At least his wasn't curly like mine.

The longer you live the more things come back around. I can remember getting into these same conversations about hair length back in 1964-1975... then hair styles for men went back shorter and the argument ceased.

Is hair length a big issue in churches?

In the late 50's, I was criticized for having a beard as a pastor. Some churches wouldn't even me preach there. Mr. Spurgeon's beard was saintly, but mine was devilish!

Cheers,

Jim
