Minneapolis Is Going To Do It

If that is what happens then it's just a political statement. The federal government does stuff like that all the time (Example - Congress mandated DOD to do its own clearances. They moved NBIB from OPM to DOD and renamed it DCSA. So now they are "doing their own clearances").
My question is about jurisdictional change, but it has to go down the chain to make sense with the stated aims, or else there is something up the chain which they find advantageous that no one is mentioning. For example, there being more Muslim jurisdiction one way compared to the other.

I seriously doubt that financing is the motive behind this effort, but rather power. BLM is up to no good, but they are not the only such entity.

I don't know. But it looks to me as a political move (one side trying to capitalize on emotional responses to an injustice). I guess I'll mark visiting Minneapolis off my bucket list......oh...wait....I can't find it on my list....:Biggrin

Now you dont hear this on the media, but some of this push comes from Islamic people who always wanted to self police their areas.

I think it is awesome that you people that don't live here know so much about Minneapolis.

Nine members of the 12 member Minneapolis City Council said today that they will begin the process of dismantling the Minneapolis PD and go to a community oriented system consisting of "community led safety initiatives" instead of a police department.
.

They're stalling. If they are serious, it doesn't have to be a process.

Send all the cops home. It's done. Easy.

I can't hardly wait. It's going to be great late night TV.:)

At some point they will not tolerate all the left's nonsense. Wait until the "Muslim Community Safety Force" starts kicking some serious leftist behinds and they will scream bloody murder.

We do not have to live in Minneapolis to know what it's like. We have friends in Missouri and they tell us. :D

It will be a textbook case of what happens where there is no police force. It will go like this:

Scenario: 11 am, the Minneapolis "Community Safety Office" (CSO) dispatch center.
CSO: "Hello, may I help you?"
Citizen: "Help, there is a man here stabbing everyone".
CSO: "Location please"?
Citizen: "We are at the Peace Monument in Adams Park, please hurry".
CSO: "Let's see, the first opening we have for a counselor to come out will be at 2pm".
Citizen (Now frantic): "Hurry! "He's coming closer"...…. (Sounds of screaming and then a gurgling noise).
CSO: "Okay, I'll see if I can get someone out there earlier, will 1pm work"?
Citizen: (No sound coming from the phone).

They will send a social worker to investigate later what happened. I would hate that job, would be very depressing, people's sin nature does not go away because the police got defunded.

Who ever agreed to dismantling the PD... Is the south end of a north bound horse... Brother Glen:Thumbsdown:Thumbsdown

Sure sounds like it, but maybe they just think like it.

Having more local community involvement in reducing crime makes great sense. Getting rid of police involvement makes none.

Communities are already free to police themselves. When they do, they won’t need the police as much. That’s what peaceful neighborhoods having been doing all along.

First getting rid of police is completely backward. Oh, yeah, that’s right, they’re progressive leftists.

Yes the minneapolis city council wants to get rid of the police, I dont understand , who are these people, they think the 'good men and women' of the city will step up and keep people safe themselves? Dont they mean then vigilante justice ?
Minneapolis City Council president aspires to have a 'police free society'

The president of the Minneapolis City Council, who went viral for saying that calling the police when your home is broken into “comes from a place of privilege,” has said she wants a “police-free society.”

Speaking on CNN’s "Cuomo Prime Time" Monday night, Lisa Bender took the idea of disbanding the police a step further.

Host Chris Cuomo told her: “When you say you see someday being police-free that sounds aspirational, a utopian concept where nobody’s committing any crime, because as long as these communities are being prayed upon, both from within and without, there’s gonna have to be good men and women willing to step up to keep people safe.”

She replied: “I think the idea of having a police-free future is very aspirational, and I am willing to stand with community members who are asking us to think of that as the goal.”

During the interview, Cuomo challenged Bender on the notion of getting rid of the police, something the host said “seems ridiculous to people”.

She replied: "We've looked at every reason that folks call 911. Why are people in Minneapolis calling for help? And we're starting to pair what's the right response to those calls. In the short term that helps our police officers focus on the work that they're trained to do, while we have a better response to people who have a mental health crisis or a physical health crisis.”

Definition of vigilante

: a member of a volunteer committee organized to suppress and punish crime summarily (as when the processes of law are viewed as inadequate)broadly : a self-appointed doer of justice
Other Words from vigilante

Someone like her has never experienced the terror of having your home broken into in the middle of the night by some thug while being at home yourself. I have news for her, black people, Hispanic people, all kinds of people have called the police to come help them when something like this happens. This kind of thinking is dangerous and the direct result of the indoctrination of young people by the professors in our higher institutions of learning who were the radical's in the 1960's. It is clear that she has been educated way beyond her intelligence capacity.

They don't want you to be able to have a firearm to protect yourself and now they want to take away the police. For some unexplainable reason this is a desire to see the breakdown of society as we know it. . We cannot let a small group of people put the rest of the nation in a constant state of danger with no protection from professional police forces. These people and what they advocate is complete insanity!

Star Tribune: What you need to know about plans to defund Minneapolis police

Will there be police on the streets of Minneapolis this summer?

Yes. The council for now has nine members agreeing on the concept of dismantling the department, but there are no agreements on the details or a plan of action for next steps.
...
Can the Council “defund” the police and stop paying them?

Not entirely.

The Council must follow the City Charter which requires the funding of “a police force of at least 0.0017 employees per resident, and provide for those employees’ compensation, for which purpose it may tax the taxable property in the City up to 0.3 percent of its value annually.”

As for what size police force the charter requires, a city spokesman would say that’s a “legal interpretation” that he wouldn’t answer.
...
What would replace the police?

The idea generally would be to have a social services-based approach, possibly using the fire department to handle drug overdose calls, health care and social services professionals to tend to mental health matters instead of militaristic, uniformed officers with guns.

But even the council members who want to dismantle the police aren’t yet articulating detailed agreement on a new approach.

Has any city in the United States done this?

There have been some attempts at shifting focus.

The police force in Camden, N.J., was dissolved and absorbed by the county sheriff, doubling the size of the latter. Training shifted into heavily emphasizing deescalation tactics where restraints and force were used as a last resort.

There’s been movement elsewhere as well to change the model. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has embraced removing $150 million from the $2 billion police budget. Last year, 911 operators in Austin, Texas, 911 began asking callers whether they are seeking police, fire or mental health assistance.

I predict that crime will skyrocket out of control and for anyone who owns property there, the value of said property will drop like a rock. Who is going to want to buy a home or open up a business in a city where criminals will have the upper hand?

The only good thing about this is that it should finally show the complete stupidity and lunacy of liberal/leftist governance and it is too bad that the good law abiding citizens who live there will be the one's to suffer.

YA, fight domestic terrorism by dismantling the police department.

so that means to fight Arson we should dismantle our fire departments.

YA, that will work.

Here in Australia, we only have federal and state police. At the municipal or local level, you have rangers who give fines for bylaws like litter, permits, pets, etc. They don't carry weapons or deal with criminal cases. Our councils are very small though. The Greater Sydney area has 35 councils, this is after we had a semi-forced merger 3 years ago where the state was trying to reduce the number of councils in the state.

The difference in the USA is that the country was founded on States/Commonwealth rights and that federal involvement should be kept to a minimum.
In theory - local control is what is most preferred. However, that started to change at the end of the War of Southern Independence in 1865.
