What is going on in America? Has our country become so morally bankrupt that we have to know accept gays in the contest? Knowing this bit of information just turned me off and cheapened the contest. If this is the direction, Miss USA is planning to head in coming years, then count me out as a viewer! How about you? Do you think this is the platform for gays to be competing? I would think that a "Gay Miss USA" would best serve women and men who desire to flaunt their gayness! This movement of political correctness is becoming morally objectionable and personally disgusting!

Nothing against the OP at all. This kind of entertainment has no place in the kingdom to which we have been transferred; Job 31:1, Colossians 1:13 IMO. I believe it would be foolish to say that men can watch these women barely clad and not have any lust. I'd stay away from that.

The Miss USA competition (as well as all other beauty contests) judges women on their appearance. Why would a Christian support them in the first place?

I see NOTHING wrong with judging a person on their appearance.
What I'm concern about is the skimpy bathing suit part of the pageant.

So we should aspire to judge people more on the basis of their appearance than the content of their character?

That's not what Salty said. He didn't assign relative importance to his judgment, just that he sees judging on appearance a valid method.

These contests are already "cheapened" and "morally objectionable".

And they encourage the most aimless and shallow stereotype of young girls - skinny, virtually naked, walking in stilettos, and vapidly stupid. We laugh till our sides hurt over the bumbling and sad responses to questions like, "What would you do to build relations between third world countries and the American government?"

As far as judging these girls by their "fitness" - you don't have to be naked and in high heels for someone to make the determination that you take care of yourself. Some of these girls have starved themselves, take pills, and purge. How "fit" is that?

Some of these girls are really smart and are good girls. Why they have to take their clothes off to "earn" scholarship monies is beyond me. Even the evening gowns they wear now are inappropriate.

It's all about - well, you all know what it's all about - the continuation of the burlesque peep shows from back in the day.

Unfortunately, they are not going to stop. And the Miss USA pageant is worse than the Miss America pageant and the children's pageants are a nightmare.

A Christian must choose to turn away from these things - for a variety of reasons.

To some extent - yes! An employer will look at your appearance during a job interview
If a person has not taken bath for two weeks, and looks like a slob, do you want him serving your pizza?

By paying attention to your self image projects the image that you pay attention to yourself.
How many of these daytime talk shows have had epsoides when a person - (usually a woman) will come on looking poorly. After a hair-do, makeup, a new stylish dress - they see themselves in a much better life.

Could be the Army brained washed me about properly presently yourself - even in our work/battle uniforms.

"Look Sharp - Be Sharp - Feel Sharp"!

From a military page: ( referencing veterans who desire to wear the military uniform)
Any individual wearing a US Military uniform is expected to reflect the high personal appearance standards and esprit de corps that the US Military in uniform represent. To this end, particular attention will be paid not only to the correct and military wear of uniform components, but also to the individual’s personal and physical appearance. All personnel exercising the privilege of wearing a US Military service or dress uniform will comply fully with their service's grooming and weight control standards.

Evidently you did not read post # 4
But here is a thought - Scarlet, I'm not sure where you are from - but I do know that down South - many IFB's believe that mixed bathing is a sin. Up North - not so much.
Here is the thing - Yes, the Bible instructs us to be modest - but does not go into detail.
Thus, I might consider the bathing suit my wife wears to be modest - yet you might not see it that way.

A Christian must choose to turn away from these things - for a variety of reasons.

Here is a very interesting read.

The whole pageantry thing has become a bit too racy. If the purpose is scholarship like they try to say, what's the reason for swimsuits and evening gowns?

I know rarely few people here who segregate swimmers. Mixed swimming has been a part of my background since I was a child.

If you and Mrs. Salty are going to the beach or pool to swim and she is wearing something appropriate and not something that is for your eyes only, that's one thing.

But another thing altogether is putting young women in very small swim suits and high heels on a stage with lights for the sole purpose of their bodies being televised for the world to judge which one is the "best" by secular, sexual, and crude standards.

There is no pool or beach on stage. There is no swimming on stage. The context is the context of a stripper who also wears minuscule amounts of clothing, high heels, and parades around on a stage under lights with music for men to scrutinize their bodies.

It's just creepy to me.

Going swimming with family and friends is one thing. This is something entirely different.

But we hope it is not based on "beauty." As someone who used to work for an employer who hired and fired women on the basis of their appearance (weight, bust line, potential sexual availability), I am quite sensitive to the issue.

If a person has not taken bath for two weeks, and looks like a slob, do you want him serving your pizza?
Those are questions of basic hygiene and professional appearance.

The Miss USA Pageant is not a review of the ladies' basic hygiene or professional appearance (unless their job is is wearing evening gowns or swimsuits), but something else... I think we know what it is. Remember, the Miss USA Pageant requires that women be unmarried - remember the whole issue of potential sexual availability I mentioned above?

By paying attention to your self image projects the image that you pay attention to yourself.

You realize that beauty pageant "beauty" is not real and doesn't stand up in the light of day. There is plastic surgery, HEAVY makeup, lots of duct tape and padding, and other types of enhancements involved. It is not a simple makeover.

I don't think you really understand the beauty pageant circuit.

I understand he is coming at this from a good-hearted and wholesome perspective. I just want him to think about the big question. Should we judge on appearance? Does the Bible have anything to say about that? (Yes it does!)

The issue is not about hygiene, professional appearance or taking care of ones self, If it was, then there would be 50 winners.

I say the same thing about parents who put their little daughters in two piece bathing suits and parade them around for perverted eyes.

Never understood trying to dress a child like an adult like that.

Lot's of talk about "not" judging others, especially women, for their looks ... as well as judging me for "lOOking" at women in scantly two piece swim suits, but not one of those beloved puritan's who cast stones in my direction talked about the sin of publicly judging another brother/sister.

All of you pharisee's (if the robe fits, you know whom you are) assumed I watched the show for lustful reasons, but, there are other events that these women are graded on, such as talents, ability to think on their feet, and graciousness. Some of you forget, the nice thing about DVR is the ability to fast forward through advertising and in my defense, the swim suit and formal gown event. I'm not that big on what someone is or isn't wearing, but I do enjoy a good talent show, and seeing how smart the person is beyond their "outward" appearance.

Some of the BB pharisee's assumed that the show was simply scantly dressed ladies. There is certainly a lot more than beauty, so shame on you for thinking badly of my motives. Maybe you don't watch because of the temptation to lust, but, that is not why my wife and I watch it. We enjoy talking about who we think may win. So, shame, shame, we know your name(s). :)

Oh, I am not being judgmental of you folks, just saying there is more to a show than the swim suit event.

Well I brought up the issue and I haven't judged you at all. I just believe we need to think carefully about these kinds of things instead of simply going along with the culture.

I grew up watching those shows - my Mom watched them and there were only three channels on the television when I was a kid. I'm quite familiar with the basic format.

There are some attempts at other elements beyond physical appearance, such as the questions they are asked. Often it is either a train wreck of an answer or a complete politically correct non-answer. If they wanted to evaluate intellect, general knowledge, and knowledge of current events, have them take a standardized test along with the Q&A, and have it figure into the results. But we all know they won't do that.

I'm sure you mean well sis, but ... I suggest you buy some horse blinders for you and Mr. Scarlett ... because just going to the local mall, or the grocery store presents women and young ladies more provocatively attired than the swim suit portion of the Miss USA show EVER WILL! At least the contestants are not trying to be eye candy for every man or hormone driven teen boy that shops where they flop. Unless you are Amish, you can't escape the lustful presentation of bodies everywhere you go today. It is wrong to assume wrong in others motives just because you have a problem ... with swim suits. Not everyone thinks like you, but then again that is a good thing. Variety makes life interesting. I learned years ago to model my life after Joseph ... and flee/run when the scenery becomes uncomfortable by way of temptation. My heart is right with God, and only He has the right to judge me, any ways. Shalom sis!

Like I said ... if the robe fits wear it! If you don't see yourself in the robe, no need to defend yourself.
