    The shift is when players play way out of their traditional position area based on the law of averages to get extra outs. To me, each player should be requried to start each play in their positions zone.

    so should the second basman be require to be on the bag - or where he traditional plays - about 1/2 to First base? What about the Short stop?

    Why? I am not sure when it was ever not allowed and if so when it was reallowed. When the game first started, with the exception of the pitcher and catcher, you could put players wherever you wanted them.

    We oldsters may remember that strategy being dominant in the pre-merger AFL, even some post-merge, as with Darryl "The Mad Bomber" Lamonica.
