Surveillance video of a wee-hours ruckus at a Macon Wal-Mart on Sunday shows a teenager race inside flashing gang signs ahead of a mob of four dozen or so people who burst in and smashed merchandise.

The commotion, which caused an estimated $2,000 in damage, appears to have been planned.

Some in the crowd also snatched a man, apparently a shopper at the Zebulon Road store, from a motorized shopping cart and dragged him to the floor, Bibb County sheriff’s officials said Monday.

The vandals, said to number between 40 and 50, sprinted down the store’s main aisle about 1:50 a.m. Sunday, “destroying merchandise displays and items,” a sheriff’s deputy’s report of the incident noted.

Apparently Walmart uses the police a lot here in the Indy area. Two women got in a fight in the east suburb of Beech Grove (once a nice place) and the video went viral. Later the police arrested both of them. I guess that the police are called twice a day at many Walmarts in this area. I tend to avoid them on the weekends.

How would that change the mob mentality that did this?

They don;t care about anyone but themselves and the excitement of the moment.

Apparently elderly greeters at Walmart are sometimes knocked to the concrete by people exiting the store with stolen goods. I don't think that the upper-middle class shops at Walmart as a general rule. It is usually better to try shopping at Walmart in the daytime as there is not much security on the parking lots. You have to have a heart for the common man to mingle at Walmart. Personally, I find a lot of things at Walmart that are difficult to locate at other stores.

I don't think the vandals cared. It was just a senseless act of intimidation and violence.

How smart were they?

The teenager seen leading the rushing horde of young men and women told a Wal-Mart employee “that this was a planned event ... to see how much damage they could cause,” the sheriff’s report said.

The teen, identified as 17-year-old Kharron Nathan Green, of Ashton Drive in northwest Bibb County, was arrested when he returned to the store to retrieve his cellphone.

Why is it that Walmart attracts those with personal hygiene issues and the pajamas-at-3PM crowd? It does not take money to not be a slob in public.

You close it, and you make it clear why it's closed; and you'll see people talking to each other about who they're gonna kick or punch if they do that stupid stuff again....

Possible. Were I wal mart and it happened again, I would consider closing it permanently. Put that information out in the city and see if that makes a difference. While they're at it, demand the perpetrators come forward or close it for sure. Forever.

It's not the money. It terrorizes your customers.

But next time, it might be $2 million. Or they terrorize some pistol packing law abiding citizen, who, in fear of his life, decides to shoot 4 or 5 of the hoodlums.

Again, to Wal-mart, that's a pittance, but 4 or 5 dead teenage hoodlums on the floor, whose relatives decide to sue wal-mart for their permissive gun policy, raises things to a new level. And opens a whole other can of worms.

So at what point do they say enough is enough?

Having been in lost prevention for retail stores I can tell you that is not the way they look at it.
