Modesty in Medical Settings

I don't wish to start a discussion here. But I would love to hear from people who are disturbed with how your modesty is sometimes violated in medical settings and people who think that the medical community needs to be more sensitive to patient modesty. Some nurses mock people when they request for same gender nurses or modesty. I believe that medical professionals should respect patients' wishes for modesty and same gender doctors/nurses for certain things.

Again, I think it is best that we don't discuss this issue in details on this discussion forum because it could become very personal. I hope you all can respect this request.

Please send me a private message if you feel strongly about this issue and explain why you think we need stronger medical patient modesty.

If you look on Google under medical patient modesty or patient modesty, you will see that a lot of people have expressed concern about this issue.

I don't mind having a male doctor. What I do mind is when they give you those little paper robes and expect you to walk down the hall with it on. Yikes.

Since the world has changed so much there are gays and lesbians in the medical field as well. I don’t feel comfortable for a man to be touching me where he should not be. However I have been examined by both male and female doctors. For some reason being checked by a male bothers me more. This is the same with hair cuts. I don’t want a guy cutting my hair. There is a lot of gayness going on. I rather have a straight woman examine me than a gay man.

I have seen the same female doctor for at least 10 years. I feel much more comfortable with her than I ever did with a male doc. Only my husband should see certain parts. But that's my hangup I guess.

Anyone's wishes should be respected, even if they're silly.

Hopefully most people are in the medical field because they enjoy practicing medicine, not because they get all hot and bothered by looking for diseases in people's personal places.

I'm as modest as the next person, and prefer my that my private parts stay, well, private (save for my wife and I). But, I also understand that doctors and nurses need to deal with the human body in order to diagnose and bring God-directed healing. That's what they do.

So, if those poor souls really need to look at the parts I normally keep under wraps, it is their problem, not mine. I feel for them...

About our bodies... We think the way we do largely because of our culture. The truth is, we can and ought to be modest people. I believe that God showed us that way back in Genesis, when He clothed Adam and Eve after they lost their innocence. He also showed us that when He cursed a son of Noah for looking upon Noah's nakedness, but that being said, 50% of the human race is like us, and 50% is like our spouse. Just plain facts. We all have the same stuff, albeit arranged at times in more or less pleasing configurations, but the same stuff nevertheless. The reason we're so enamored to look is largely because we sin with our eyes, focusing on our perceived idea of beauty (or lack thereof) instead of seeing people as God's people.

I agree. Each person has the responsibility to maintain their own health and to see the physician of their choice. That's their business. Period. I would never tell them otherwise. That's arrogance.

My only quirk is when someone chooses to impose their rigid beliefs about this upon me. This isn't my first forum to meet the OP.

I've seen men and I've seen women in the medical profession. I've been clothed from head to toe and stark naked. So has everyone else here.

I've never seen anyone whom I felt was there for peep show. Never.

Certainly there are the occasional unethical persons in the medical field in this area. But there are also pastors, priests, teachers, lawyers, professional athletes, door-to-door salespersons, policemen, firemen, and more who violate codes of ethics.

We don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I'm not going to stop supporting my local police just because one of them killed someone unnecessarily. I'm not going to stop going to church just because there is a preacher somewhere who had sex with a congregant.

And I'm not going to refuse to see a male physician, emergency worker, x-ray technician, CAT scan personnel, or anyone other medical personnel who need to see me in various stages of disrobe to treat me just because there may be some doctor out there somewhere who violates codes of ethics.

It's painting the entire medical profession, the men specifically, with an insulting broad brush. It just makes hound dogs out of them and I can't go there.

Everybody go to the physician of your choice - your convictions are your business.

Besides, it doesn't much matter in this world anymore. I ended up having a lesbian midwife assistant who appeared to be dating my midwife, with a straight male doctor as my backup. I had no clue on any of them until I got to know them better. (but not TOO well, lol) You just never know...

As far as modesty itself with either one, I have to laugh when they give you a paper gown for an intensive, full blown exam. AND leave the room so you can change into it. Like I'm gonna be scarred because they saw my kneecaps while examining the rest of me. :laugh:

You know, this used to bother me--way back before I had two kids and a hysterectomy and a bunch of other stuff. Now my viewpoint has changed. What might be somewhat uncomfortable for me must be sheer torture for the poor doctor/medical person doing a procedure. No wonder they charge so much money! If I had to deal with what they did all day, every day, I'd charge big bucks too!

I thank God for doctors, nurses, EMT's, etc. who help save lives, comfort the sick, and treat the dying with care and concern no matter how embarrassing it would be for either party IF they chose to make a big hairy issue over it. All the ones I've met make sure a patient keeps their dignity as much as possible. God bless them all!

We recently had advanced CPR and AED training at our workplace. The first thing one does (after asking the questions and checking breathing) is to rip off all clothing above the waist... No time for oggling... Just get to work!

I thought about that when Steve Anderson was talking about men becoming gynecologists just to oogle women. All I could think of is the women I see sitting in my doctor's office and I just pray for him. LOL

And I agree with everyone else about the robes. Good heavens they could make them just a tad thinner, crisper, harder to use if they tried really hard.

Fact is, I too am grateful for the docs and nurses whatever their gender. I've been to see them a few times when I was so sick I flat out didn't care which is why I think the modesty flew out the window somewhere along the line.

When I trained as a nurse (a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away) we were taught how to wash a person without exposing them to all and sundry. It really is not that hard. Almost all proceedures can be modestly performed, or at the very least extremely professionally...ie I the nurse just do not see a derriere or whatever...they look the same after the first 1000 or so.

A person has the right to ask for a female attendant (in the case of a male nurse/doctor). Where I trained there were no male nurses and the aboriginal men who had to be hospitalised for complications in the initiation process would not have female nurses looking at "mens business" so the doctors attended the dressings.

How dare anyone mock you for requesting a male/female in attending you in regards to modesty.....scream cultural sensitivity issues if nothing else. A lot of folk ask for a spouse or close family member to assist them in toileting and/or showering. Whether cultural,religious or whatever it is ultimately your body and your sense of self....being hospitalised should not be equated to demeaning of who you are.:thumbs:
