Personally, I think a good standard was the clothing of the Victorian Era. It covered about all of the human body in both males and females, and was more or less, fairly loose, so as not to show anything that could be considered as tempting.

Then those who wore such often added some "enhancements" at what some would consider either inappropriate and others strategic places to then draw attention. This type of stuff is what some of us are speaking of with the "double standard".

If we are found looking upward (as opposed to downward at some other individual), doesn't this kind of take care of itself, in the first place?

Oh yeah, one final question- Can something be modest at the beach and not modest elsewhere? It would seem to me that the clothing would be the same, no matter where, and in fact if were wet, migh...

Yes, I was tired and tend to use worldly language sometimes. It is automatic, and i need to work on that. I try best to avoid personal attack language. I mentioned it because I did get graphic upon what a man can do to avoid dressing in a tempting manner as to keep it balanced. This didn't get across completely, but that's fine. The Mod did great.

gerald your doing better with your words  (minus the ungodly comment regarding MK's godliness) If you could find a way to get your point across without interjecting your unwanted evaluation of others salvation or any other personal attacks disquised as something of God, you might get somewhere.

Gregory, I know you mean no mallice. That is why I heard what you said

    Hello Magnetic Poles,
actually your assertion is totaly wrong. It does not agree with scripture. IT all has to do with what God sees as modest, not men or culture. In the book of Gen., You know the story, at the fall the Lord God clothed the man and the woman. Keep in mind that there was none else around to see them except themselves, yet God covered them. The hebrew words in the text are words of covering from the top to the bottom.
    Liken lost man today they clothed themselves with fig leaves, simple apron to cover only the vital parts. This was not sufficient, for God saw it not fit. He clothed them differently;

Gen 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them

    The hebrew word for "coat" is k@thoneth {keth-o'-neth} or kuttoneth {koot-to'-neth}
    And it means;
a long shirt-like garment usually of linen and is translated elseware robe. In other words he covered them from top to bottom. So women today who show breasts or other body parts are not in line with God.

Now about the burquas. This is a common plea of those who want to continue to hold onto immodesty. There is no comparrision. First off there has not been a single suggestion that Christian women should be wearing a burquas. However I can tell you without hesitation that a Godly women would do such if she were in a culture that called for it. She would not start claiming her freedom in Christ and rebell, for you see a godly women wants to honor those around her and her Lord by not showing rebellion.

1Sa 15:23 For rebellion [is as] the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness [is as] iniquity and idolatry.

This is a true statement"little calf won't damn you to hell" however rebellion will.

You are corrcet. Modesty does not change due to venue. Christians need to take care in their activities in this area just like any other.

    Hello Joe,
thank you for the correction. While I did not intend to attack anyone on a personal bases i do accept your correction and strive to incorporate it in my posts. It is a difficult thing to speak clearly without watering down truth but again I will seek to do so. God bless and thank you.

If I may let me add this. This is a one of the pages on my site dealing with modesty. I have held off posting this because of length, but it really does speak to the issue in a loving and Christian manner something that is sometimes very difficult in an open discussion and yet that is not an excuse.

"How does a woman discern the sometimes fine line between
proper dress and dressing to be the center of attention? The
answer starts in the intent of the heart. A woman should examine her motives and goals for the way she dresses. Is her intent to show the grace and beauty of womanhood? Is it to reveal a humble heart devoted to worshipping God? Or is it to call attention to herself and flaunt her beauty? Or worse, to attempt to lure men sexually? A woman who focuses on worshipping God will consider carefully how she is dressed, because her heart will dictate her wardrobe and appearance." John MacArthur

What statement do my clothes make about my heart? In choosing what clothes to wear today, whose attention do I
desire and whose approval do I crave? Am I seeking to please God or impress others? Is what I wear consistent with biblical values of modesty, self-control and respectable apparel, or does my dress reveal an inordinate identification and fascination with sinful cultural values? Who am I trying to identify with through my dress? Is the Word of God my standard or is it the latest fashion? Have I solicited the evaluation of other godly individuals regarding my wardrobe?
Does my clothing reveal an allegiance to the gospel or is
there any contradiction between my profession of faith and
    my practice of godliness?

So, I’m ready to leave the house, but I still have to do a modesty check. What are some things I should look for as
I stand in front of my mirror?

    When I am wearing a loose-fitting blouse or scoop-neck, can I
see anything when I lean over? If so, I need change my top.

A word on purse straps: How could a purse possibly be a
modesty concern? When you’re wearing the strap across your
chest. Regardless of the shirt you’ve got on this accentuates
your chest and creates a temptation for men.

If I am wearing a button-down top, I need to turn sideways and move around to see if there are any gaping holes that expose my chest. If there are, I’ve got to grab the sewing box and pin between the buttons.

Wearing sleeveless should be ruled out. The reason is that when we move around can others can see my bra?

We should never wear a spaghetti-strap, halter-top or see-through blouse? Not even pins will fix this problem! Most guys find these very unhelpful. It’s time to go back to the closet.

Can I see the lace or seam of my bra through my shirt? In this
case, seamless bras are a better option.
One final shirt check: Does it reveal any part of my cleavage?

Does my midriff show when I raise my hands above my head?
Is my shirt just plain too tight? If the answer is "yes" to any
one of these questions, then I need to change my outfit

Does my midriff (or underwear) show when I bend over or
lift my hands? If so, is it because my skirt or my pants are
too low? Either my shirt needs to be longer or I need to find
a skirt or pants that sit higher.

I also have to turn around to see if what I’m wearing is too
tight around my derriere, or if the outline of my underwear
shows. If so, I know what I have to do!

About shorts – I can’t just check them standing up. They should not draw attention to our sexuality. I suggest that they come to knee length

The "sit-down" check applies to my skirt or dress as well. When I sit down my dress needs to cover my knees.
And I must remember to keep my skirt pulled down and my
    knees together when I’m seated.

And speaking of skirts, watch out for those slits! Does it
reveal too much when I walk? Pins are also helpful here.

Before I leave, I need to give my skirt a "sunlight check." Is
it see-through? If so, I need a slip which is almost always today.

Finally, I must remember to do this modesty check with my
shoes on. High-heels make my dress or skirt appear shorter.
And don’t forget – this all applies to formal wear as well.

A note on swimwear There is no such thing as store bought swimwear that is modest. I will include some links for swim ware or take a pair of not too tight jeans and cut them off around the knees. For a top wear a shirt that is not exposing the body and yet is comfortable. Under the clothing wear a full length swim suit rather then just underwear. Remember as women we need to take care not to clothe ourselves in a manner that causes our brothers to be tempted or bring dishonor on our Lord. These guys have a big battle to fight. Sometimes we will have to deny selves to follow Christ.

"…Women should adorn themselves in respectable
apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with
braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but
with what is proper for women who profess godliness-
    with good works."
    1 Timothy 2:9-10

God clothed Adam and Eve in the skins of the animals from which blood was shed? If that is the standard, should not we all be wearing "hides" clothing?

Perish the thought that it might be of cotton, or even worse, Polyester!

Point is, God merely said modest. And like some other things, what I see as modest might not be seen as modest by some other. Is not there a Scripture that speaks of faith and doubt, I believe? So what one sees as immodest would be sin to he or she if they wore it, No??

Even with all this, I'm a 'brains', face, and eyes person, myself!

Least that is how Peggy grabbed me. :love2:

    NOW what?

    Hello Ed,
To answer your question on material the answer is no. The material has nothing to do with modesty unless it is so shear that others can see through it. The amout of covering or lack of does however. The example that was used in Gen. was to show the error of thought that modesty is based on personal values or culture instead of God's. The passages that deal with modesty are clear that it is a call for the Christian not to clothe themselves in any manner that would cause a brother or sister to sin in thought or deed.

Again as toi what is modest it is not up to us to decide outside of the Lord. I think the previous post I gave on modesty says it best in its laying down standards for such.

No it would be enough IF those who preach today would just use the bible and teach their flock what real modesty is as well as whhat goldiness is. However in those cases where it is not done, and that is many, I would sugget the list. ;)

Obviously, truly Christian women are forbidden from wearing seat belts with shoulder straps, because the shoulder strap comes across through the middle of the chest.

While the world (the godless government) will order you to wear your seatbelt in order to tempt foolish men (clearly a demonic ploy), you must obey God rather than submit to the schemes of the devil and evil men.

It is better for you to go through the windshield and have your body destroyed, than to give lustful men an opportunity to consider your chest (because we all know that they wouldn't have a thought in the world about your chest unless that seatbelt subdivided it).

(That's sarcasm, for those who are wondering.)

Maybe we can add a list of foods to eat as well. Maybe a list of good exercises for those that may have eaten a few extra slices of cake in their day. I’ve always found it so odd that the legalists choose this one. If one can assume fruit (in association with salvation) is displayed by coverage, then one could assume the same for gluttony right?

For the most part the problem is within the man. If you don’t have the self control, this is not because a shirt is too tight; it’s because you are lacking in that area.

I think it should be hung in all chruches, public buildings and anyplace people of both genders gather. Right next to the 10 commandments...

Hey, maybe if we flip the tablets over we'll find the list printed on the other side?

    Hello Gerald.
Do you wear a robe and sandals?
If you are going to be biblical, then that is the only attire you should wear.

If you are not willing to be biblical, don't force it on others.

Furthermore, we do not become perfect at salvation, we do grow.
You are proclaiming a false teaching that the Holy Spirit perfects us at Salvation, and we never need convicting later...

That is a false teaching of the Nazarenes.

"Gerald", if I may ask a personal question, since a previous post has left me in some doubt. Are you male or female? Just wonderin', based on post #88, and the use of the 'first person'.
