Man brutally beaten after standing up for bullied teen

Despite the concussion, the fractured bones and the surgery, he says he would probably do it again.

A 43-year-old man says he made the right decision when he tried to stop three buff bullies from picking on a 14-year-old at the beach. The man, Wen Jones, paid a high price for being a good Samaritan — the pack of 20-year-olds jumped on him and beat him savagely.

On Wednesday, authorities arrested the last of the three men accused of pummeling Jones on May 19. They nabbed the first two last week.

Cody Moore Roon, Tyler Dylan Carswell and Eric Michael Deiter, all from Palm Beach County, are now facing aggravated battery charges because of the severity of the injuries Jones suffered.

The trouble started early that day at the park, with Roon, Carswell and Deiter bullying the younger kids on the beach, according to police reports. Witnesses told police the three were picking on one child in particular — the 14-year-old boy named Zion, who is an amateur competitive skateboarder from the Jupiter area. The men kicked sand in his face and called him names.

His father, 55-year-old LeRoy Wright Jr., said they used racial slurs toward Zion, who is black. But police have not charged the men with a hate crime, and investigators were not available Thursday to comment further.

Later that day, the 14-year-old and his friends stood near the restrooms and showers, waiting to go home. The three men continued to harass them, so Wright stepped in and told them to leave, the report said.

Jones, who was walking by, saw the gang of athletically built men menacing the man and his son. He knew they were about to attack — and decided he couldn't let that happen.

"I couldn't stand there and watch this older guy and kid get beaten up," Jones said.

This might be racial. I grew up skateboarding, and it is a clique. Skateboarding is generally considered an "all white" sport in this country, though it is popular worldwide with all races. It is pretty rare to see a black skateboarder in this country, even more rare to see one who is highly skilled and competes as this young man does. That could upset some. If so, it is nothing but jealousy.

I don't know the facts, so I can't say for certain this was the cause of these fellows picking on this young man, but it certainly could be.

Nice graph. But that graph shows nothing but gang member numbers. It doesn't show who is being violent.

Not to mention you don't have to be in a gang to be violent.

Perhaps a better picture in the US are the crime reports kept by the FBI. In 2011,http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2011/crime-in-the-u.s.-2011/tables/table-43

Since the beginning of the 20th century, racial and ethnic differences in the rates of serious juvenile and adult offending have been repeatedly observed in the United States (Hawkins, Laub, & Lauritsen, 1998). The lifetime risk of being arrested and incarcerated for Black and Hispanic males is much higher than it is for White males (Blumstein & Graddy, 1982; Bonczar & Beck, 1997), rates of involvement in serious violence are much higher for Blacks than Whites (Morenoff, 2005), and Blacks have a higher rate of personal violence and homicide victimization than Whites do (Sampson & Lauritsen, 1997).

Thank you captain obvious for opening our eyes to another racially motivated attack. We live in a sinful world where sin abounds regardless of skin color. God doesn't look at skin color and neither should we. Bullying is wrong regardless of skin color.

Why are there no threads started where a white person or white group bully or beat up a white person? Because there is nothing to debate there. There is no difference between that and the thread started here. Bottom line, sinful world.

Not having threads about race is racist, um, .....right? Oh, now I'm confused. I'm sure Zaac will straighten me out though!

It's funny that they mention serious crime in that study. But according to the FBI, Whites commited more of those in their most recent tally from 2011 in practically every category.
