For starters you might do a search for terms like "Donbas shelling" (or "Donbass"). But avoid co-opted search sites like Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, etc. Brave, Start, or Yandex give more mixed results.

What i want is a source that shows its actually going on and what motivates them to do it. Ukraine just randomly shelling a country that can wipe them out makes no sense. In all of putins justifications this has not been one of them.

LOL, the OP makes it seem like the Ukrainian President is bombing his own people while the Russians are dropping bread and giving humanitarian aid. This is so reminiscent of the propaganda the Soviets did with the Finnish Winter War when the Soviets bombed Helsinki and claimed they were dropping bread. This lead to the dark Finnish humor, telling Foreign Minister Molotov that if he was bringing the bread, they would bring the Vodka. They called their drink the "Molotov Cocktail."

I have friends in the country of Georgia who are helping refugees. The stories are all about Russian human rights abuses.
A church friend is receiving Ukrainian refugees here in the US. Their stories are all about Russian atrocities.

Whatever conspiracy websites and news places the OP is going to...it isn't the reality that refugees are coming with. If you really want to have no propaganda, go talk with the refugees.

You are correct this is a “civil war” of sorts,

These people are not “Russian”, however, they may be Russian speaking Ukrainian citizens seeking independence despite overwhelming votes in that area against separating from Ukraine. But they are Ukrainian citizens. If they wanted to be Russian citizens, it’s a short trip across the border in Russia. I’m sure Putin really cares more about these people than acquiring territory. Not really.

The borders determine citizenship, not the language or inherited nationality. Putin has violated a written agreement to respect Ukraines borders.

This is an excellent short video on the so-called Azov Batallion. That designation is misleading because it makes it sound like it is a mere fringe group. It is actually a broad, growing movement. A movement that is still being funded by our government, but n a shell-+game sort of way.
