Looks like Michael was the most popular name for almost 50 years (if I counted right).

My middle name was the most popular name in the year that I was born.

Mine was #13 in 1957.
The worst part about being named "Michael", came when I was in the 2nd grade. I attended
a Catholic school, and my 2nd grade teacher was a nun, fresh off the boat from Italy. She
spoke English, but with that strong Italian accent.
There were six Michaels in the class..yep, 6, so she had to figure a way to call us out individually,
and she picked nicknames for five of us. I got stuck with "Mickey", which was fine until the class
began calling me every "Mickey" name they could come up with, not limited to Mickey Mouse,
Mickey Mud Turtle..and a few others I don't remember.
When I started 4rd grade, I demanded my name be changed to "Mike", and has been since,
although family, who never forget anything, still call me "Mick".

In the third grade there were 3 Gary's in my class. Our teacher called us by our first name and last initial.
My little brother, born 1958, is a Michael.
There were seven Larrys in my 4th grade class, I was 'little Larry'. 1954 was a good year for Larrys.

My brother Michael was born in 1958 as well.
Sadly, my first name is not on that list in any year. And Gary Coleman made it really popular.
