Murders - more than just the numbers

From another thread - as in part this was going off OP a bit.

The statistics are interesting. They basically show that, concerning murder, the overwhelming majority of murders are committed by someone of the same race.

Also, there is clearly higher percentage rates of reported crimes committed by Americans of African descent compared to their percentage in the population.

Personally, I would like to see a comparison by age, not just race. Do you have a community where you have a larger percentage of minority youth in comparison to older white people?

For instance, what if Americans of African descent make up 20 percent of a total population but 40 percent of population under 25? A comparison by age might tell us as much or more than a comparison by race.

You can also add comparisons by high school graduations rates, job rates, teenage pregnancies rates.

The Link previously referred to:
Excellent points you have brought up
However, you mentioned "Americans of African descent " Do we assume that all who are of African descent are actually Amerindians? Same with Latinos -

No, just Americans first and foremost as opposed to some racial identification first and foremost.

From the article and other discussions, a lot of emphasis is placed on “percentage” statistics. For instance, you will see a statistic that Americans of African descent make up 13(?) percent of population, but commit 30(?) percent of violent crimes. That scares people and can be used by some to suggest Americans of African descent are more prone to commit crime in general and violent crime in particular.

I had commented that such statistics may be better understood if other elements were added. For instance, Americans of African descent may make up 13(?) percent of the population, but make up 30(?) percent of population under 25 in any given community. Perhaps 60(?) percent of high school drop outs or people without jobs, or victims of assault or abuse.

I guess the point I’m trying to make is that race is not, or should not be, the determining factor in crime statistics.

I would guess that nearly 100 percent of criminals have little/no relationship with God.

Fully agree! - it is so easy to take any stat and make say what you want it to say
and as you stated -the more conditions you put in - the better the over position.

Have you ever heard about the race that included a Russian and American?
The Russian came in second, but the American came in Next to last

So who won the race?

Age distribution may be an indicator, but the same for absence of parent(s), residential location, household income, cultural attitudes, church attendance, etc.

There are other stats to consider as well. Per BOP, nearly 11% of inmates are Mexican nationals. Only about 82% are US citizens.

When they consider race, Hispanic/Latino is completely ignored. They offer only four categories: Asian, Black, Native American, and White. So where do they place Mexican nationals? Obviously not under Asian (1.5%) or Native American (2.3%).

The reason statistics are such a dangerous tool is that they are often very selective or too general. Your little riddle is a case in point.

You said nothing of how many participants there actually were, only that two specific participants were a Russian and an American.

Perhaps you meant to be more specific, but it serves to illustrate that unless you pay close attention, you may conclude something not actually stated.

Its not race, its culture. I agree that percentage wise, black Americans commit much more crime than white Americans. My observations certainly confirmed that in the counties I worked in. The culture is 100% responsible.

.

RT - you hit the nail on the head! There were only two participants - and yes, it was the American who won the race.

The one thing I forgot to mention is that it was Russian media that reported this!

In spite of my old age; I finally recalled one other thing - when I first herd this it was the media of the USSR. It was trying to point out how the communists were reporting the news, from only the govts point of view.

I don’t know that it is a true statement that “percentage wise, blacks commit far more crime than whites”. I don’t think that’s true.

I think whites commit a greater percentage of all crime, because they are a greater percentage of the population.

It may be true that Americans of African descent commit a larger percentage of crimes in comparison to their numbers in the population, I. e, they make up 13(?) percent of population but 25(?) percent of all crime. But if Americans of European descent make up 65(?) percent of the population but 45(?) percent of all crime then whites commit far more crime, percentage wise, than blacks.

Culture is certainly a factor in crime, no matter who commits it. I don’t believe a single culture defines any race.

That is really funny. It is the bias in the headline trick. You still see that in the USA from time to time as well.

That might be a fun thread. What’s the most misleading headline you’ve ever seen?

From the BOP info listed above: whites make up 58 percent of prison population, blacks 38 percent.

From that you could say whites commit far more serious crimes than blacks.

Do the math.
I did. 58 percent is significantly greater than 38 percent.

You apparently have burr under your saddle when it comes to me. Therefore, I’ll just wish you well and say...

Thanks for the conversation

And while we’re derailing the thread (what are the stats on that?), there’s this bevy of discoveries that eventually led to some lifesaving innovations. There's no such thing as the "average" man or woman.

When U.S. air force discovered the flaw of averages
That was one of the most interesting articles I have read. The “average person” doesn’t exist. When speaking of averages concerning people, you must give a range of measurements around the average.

Good info
