Yes, Daisy, they did. Ever hear of the Hanjar division? They worked together with the Nazis to hunt down the Jews in Europe. The musliim Grand Mufti of Jerusalem headed it all up and recruited muslims to hunt down the Jews.

As far as the OP, dude in Turkey would do well to remember Turkish islamic atrocities - the Armenian genocide, for one.

The Death Marches during the Armenian Genocide involved over 1 million Armenians.

I agree with you. totally, they are lost but as all humanity, they are evil. i do place most of the blame on ourselves as Christians because we havent reached them with the love of Christ like we should have. Very, very few missionaries are going to the Islam dominated parts of the world. I actually have several friends who are missionaries going to Northern Africa. the time in which we live is evil and sadly these muslims are more devout in their religion than we are in ours.

    Actually,

The muslims have had missionaries for centuries . . . the results are pretty obvious. There are as many martyrs as there have been converts. In the old days there were as many martyrs as there were missionaries.

speaking of hooking up, weren't the Zionists in cahoots w the Nazis?

    http://www.jewsnotzionists.org/nyt/nyt031171.html

yet how come they're spared any criticism?

but ... back to Pope B16, isn't there a case of Pot calling Kettle black in his speech?

'Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached' cld just as well be rephrased:

'Show me just what the Romish Church brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.'

think of the Inquisition n the Crusades for starters.

mohomeden armied invaded Israel, the ME, North Africa, and Europe . . . then Christians counter attacked - not the other way around.

The fact that except for Europe that part of the world is muslim should give you an idea of who did the the best military campains.

Sounds like you are in denial.

Why do you deny Christianity? Why would you connect Christianity with the religion of an anti-christ like hitler?

This is really an interesting discussion. On any other day, we would see posts about hellbound Catholics and the Pope leading the procession. Now, there are posts defending the pope and hailing him as the righteous defender of Christianity.

Wake me up when you have it all sorted out.:sleeping_2:

um, them Romish forces do not equal "Christians," who slaughtered Jews, Muslims, n eastern Orthodox believers alike.

hard for some to believe, but Rome n Mecca have far more in common than usually acknowledged.

i dunno, both of them cld've shared the honours, both the pot n the kettle!

who do u think Luther had in mind when he sang "N tho this world w devils filled shd threaten to undo us"?

The Armenian Genocide was the first genocide of the 20th Century. Here is a good documentary about it. Just click on the circle that says ABC to see the documentary:

According to your quote, some of the teachings were characterized that way, not the people protesting.

    Big difference.

But then again...look at the differences:

USA: South Park cartoon shows Jesus in a blasphemous and vulgar way. Repsonse: Christians respond with letters of protest.

EUROPE: Political cartoons show Mohammed's image, and link it with violence.
Response: Many muslims riot, burn, and kidnap in Europe. Some cities are near anarchy for several days.

    See the difference?

Daisy, if you're going to be intellectually honest, you have to admit that Islam fosters more of that radical hatred than Christianity. (Gee...wonder why...maybe it's because its a false religion?)

Another thing: These "German Christians" responsible for the Holocaust--the actions of the Holocaust perpetrators were not tied directly to religion. Most of the Islamo-terrorism is directly tied to the religion of Islam. Another big difference.

    Partly agree and partly disagree.

Benedict was speaking to an academic audience and adopted an academic tone; his subject was the dehellenization of Christianity, and he said the Reformers, though the doctrine of sola scriptura initiated the first state of dehellenization. In the context of discussing the practical aspects of hellenic thought on the church, he was using Manuel II Paleologus as an example of the difference between hellenic and Muslim thought.

Of course, it's hard to see how the pope (though pointing out that Manuel's comments were influenced by the fact Constantinople was under seige by the Turks) could have not thought his comments would be brandished about by followers of Islam. Partly, I think, this is a reflection of Ratzenberg's career, largely in academics and within the bureaucracy of the church, not in the public eye.

It didn't help the pope, of course, that he overlooked the many attempts of the Latin church to compel religious observance and that it was the Catholic powers who in the Fourth Crusade fatally weakened the Byzantine Empire. It was enough to make Pope Innocent III, who had originally authorized the expedition, so say that "You vowed to liberate the Holy Land but you rashly turned away from the purity of your vow when you took up arms not against Saracens but Christians… The Greek Church has seen in the Latins nothing other than an example of affliction and the works of Hell, so that now it rightly detests them more than dogs."

    Yes, you're right.

I see more differences than that. The South Park cartoon was created by Americans in a Christian dominated society and was making fun of Moslems - the blasphemous Jesus was, in the cartoon itself, created by Moslems to get back at the Christians for making fun of Mohammed. The Dutch cartoons were created by Christians in a Christian dominated society making fun of Mohammed. The cartoons were just the spark that lit the tinder that had existed for some time.

See the difference? Not that the rioting is excused at all, but Americans & Europeans have been known riot over sports games.

I'm not convinced that's true. Radical elements in both religions use their respective Holy Books to justify their actions.

I don't see how either sentence is true. It seems to me that when Christians perpetrate atrocities either they're not "real" Christians or their religion is beside the point while all acts of violence committed by a Moslem is automatically religious-based with no distinction of culture, politics, land & natural resources acquisition.

This reminds me of the time that Summers pontificated about mathimatical and scientific field leaders amongst a group of academics and suggested a hypothesis that perhaps men's and women's brains were wired differently. This was not received well by women. Some people are isolated, some people just don't think things through properly. In both cases, I think these men might have considered there would be some backlash to their comments. I would have preferred to hear the Pope say something about historical accuracy than that he didn't mean to offend anyone.

Well, yes. But I learned a long, long time ago that academic types are totally buffaloed when things they say to their own are spread outside academia and not everyone loves it. (Summers' problem, of course, came within acedemia, but it wouldn't have amounted to anything if the reaction on the outside hadn't been negative.)

Given the pope's comments, there was nothing that he could have said about historical accuracy that would have made one whit of difference. (Unless, of course, he would have been willing to trash many Catholics in the process, which might have made it more palatable to some.)

But that was beside the point. He wasn't really talking about history per se so much as he was talking about the intellectual history of Europe vs. the intellectual history of Islam, i.e., the hellenistic conception of God as rational vs. the Islamic conception of God as sovereign without rational or logical limits.

I admit Benedict should have chosen some other method of explaining his argument, but I don't think it occurred to him he was making the argument that he's appeared to have made.

No, the Pope stopped short of an apology. He said he was sorry that they were offended. He didn't say, "Sorry, I was wrong about that." He won't apologize because that would mean he's wrong, and the Pope is considered infallable in spiritual matters.
