How would you say it is different than the book You Mean I Don't Have to Tithe?: A Deconstruction of Tithing and a Reconstruction of Post-Tithe Giving by David A. Croteau?

I haven't heard of that book, but I have sampled a couple other books that argue the same concept. I have read AresMan's book, and it seems to contain the most extensive research that I have seen on the subject. Not only does it cover the context of every verse that mentions tithing, it also covers most passages that are taken out of context to claim church tithing, many other passages that explain what was going on during the tithing passages, and an extensively researched history of how the concept of tithing evolved into the church and how many familiar and not so familiar scholars over the two millenniums protested the idea.

AresMan's book is more than a "you don't have to tithe because the OT Law does not apply to us... look at all the passages that say that the OT Law no longer applies."

When I consider the point that Jesus did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it I believe that he is talking about the spirit of the law. He is saying in rabbi language that he did not come to misinterpret scripture (the law) but to fulfill all that God intended and that includes the spirit of the law not just the language but also what lies behind the law. The OT law has both the wording and the spirit behind it. So when one considers giving does it not bring with it a spirit.

Yes, the spirit and not the letter (2 Corinthians 3:6).

We are not under any command that obligates any specific amount. We should give cheerfully, abundantly, and purposefully to meet needs. We do not owe a percentage of our income to a church (which is never found in the Bible--Old or New Testaments).
