My First Wedding Ceremony !

I performed my first wedding ceremony today. I was more nervous doing that than I ever have been preaching. I do have a question.

At the end I said by the power vested in me by God and the state of North Carolina I pronounce you husband and wife.

Do I have power from the state because I am an ordained minister ?????? or ?????

As far as I understand. Your signature goes on the marriage document that the State has you to sign after the service. To show that this couple was married in the sight of God and the state....yes you have that power from the state but its because you are an ordaned minister.

(Too bad you don't have the power make the state lower taxes).

Congrats! I was pretty nervous at my first one too. But I always say the same thing. (by the power vested in me by God and the state of Texas).

Music is correct, you are given the right to unite people in marriage by the state simply because you are a minister of the Gospel.

In Canada, we are licensed by the Province to perform legal weddings, once we have been ordained and our names submitted by our denomination. If we leave our church, or the province, we lose that right, and must reapply.

Any service, whatever words are used, is deemed legal and authoritative. Whilst we are licensed by the province, we also have the right to decline any couple for marriage if we deem them unsuitable for marriage. In other words, we didn't just become a civil servant.

Cheers, and I understand the nervousness. Wait until you have done over 300 weddings!

But really.... thats the way it ought to be.

If you are ordained and the state recognizes that ordination, you have authority to perform weddings in that state.

I used to live in NC and my first wedding I had to go to the local courthouse to get proper papers authorizing me to perform marriages and officiate at funerals.

If you have not applied for those papers, the wedding is not recognized by the state. If you applied for those papers, and was granted them, then you have the authority or power, not by God only, but by the state also.

We must remember, we are to obey the laws of the land as Paul wrote in Romans 13.

I went to the courthouse and they said just by me being ordained I can do weddings in NC and most other states aswell some are more strict

After having done some weddings myself, I would be perfectly happy to let the state do the weddings. They are more trouble than they are worth. Particularly, with bridal magazines now driving it into the bride to be that it is her day and she should insist on what she wants regardless of the position of the pastor. Of course, I have already developed the reputation of being overly inflexible and judgemental since I have refused to marry couples who are living together w/o making other arranges and confession of their sins.
