I was out witnessing on saturday and spoke with two people. One person attends a church very similar to seventh day adventism. He tried to get into an argument with me over his interpretation of the day of worship. As an evangelist I usually do not do this sort of thing as its not my focus. But one thing I did note abut him was his refusal to read any commentaries, christian living books, or have any authority other than his own mystical revelations and interpretations so no book I recommended that he read he listened too. R. Kent Hughes has got some good material on the day of worship in both books that I own of his. However what amazed me was that he said he does not like commentaries and that he only reads the Bible, yet he suggested that I watch Chuck Missler or whatever his name was on Youtube, so it appeared he was hypocritical. He does not read books because he reads the Bible, yet at the same time suggesting I watch videos form Chuck Missler.
The other person I spoke with by phone and she came from an assembly of God background. She also held to the view of not reading books, because she only reads the Bible. Yet she later told me of commentary she is reading in her study Bible by some scholars. So she also did not take her own advice.
I believe that many who tell me that they do not read books because they read the Bible do not follow their own words, and want no authority other than their own mystical experiences and interpretations. But according to the book of Ephesians chapter 4 God has given us teachers and a reason. Teachers must be tested, but it is foolish not to read books by gifted teachers and writers in addition to reading the Bible.
