According to USAToday (I didn't see the race), Darrell Waltrip commented on the last lap caution flag and said, on the last lap, they should be allowed to race for it. I agree!

Could be worse, at least it is not like Formula One where the same driver, Michael Schumaker in the Ferrari, wins every race!

Always irritating when the officials determine the result of a race, not the racers themselves. I'm not a big Nascar fan, but this is ridiculous.

If the accident is between the leaders and the finish line - it is appropriate to throw the yellow glag.

If not - let them race back to the finish!

On the other hand, let me defend NASCAR...

NASCAR racing at the top level has determined the finish of the race by the advertised number of laps or miles for years. It's the Daytona 500 (miles), not the Daytona 500-unless-we-have-a caution-in-which-case-it-becomes-the-Daytona 502.5. Statistically, few races end under caution. It's just that the last 4 out of 5 have, so it seems like NASCAR has a terrible procedure. Consider this scenario: Your favorite driver is leading with two laps to go, there is a caution and the race is extended under a new procedure for two laps. However, your driver had a strategy to run the advertised distance. Now he has to pit for gas so that he can complete the new, surprise distance, he loses the lead, and finishes 15th. How fair is that? Guaranteed green-flag finishes are the procedure of bush-league Saturday night races in which there is a short distance and little strategy. NASCAR races are not short sprints. They are grueling marathons which involve strategy. Throwing strategy out for the cheap thrill of a daring finish diminishes the sport. I don't think NASCAR should tack on laps to the advertised distance.

That's a good point, and a good example of the problem NASCAR faces. It's a situation where you can't please everyone.

The problem of finishing under yellow is not a new one - it's been around forever.

When I go to races, I enjoy the whole race, not just the last lap. Otherwise we should just run a short ten lapper and all go home.

To say the race is ruined because it finished under yellow is not true. Most times the leader has some advantage in distance when racing to the line. What about all of the races where the leader stretches out to a big lead (like Jimmie Johnson in the Coke 600) for nearly the whole race? Is that ruined?

When I go to races, I enjoy the racing throughout the field, not just for the lead or across the finish line. On TV, you have to watch what they want to show - in the stands you watch what YOU want to watch.

I was at Martinsville this Spring and enjoyed watching Jeff Gordon try to come back after hitting the chunk of concrete - he was racing hard, and I'm sure the TV boys pretty much ignored his efforts because he wasn't leading and he wasn't Dale Earnhardt's son.

On some tracks, a green-white-checkers rule would lead to a lot of wrecks - bunching the cars up for a two lap shootout could be deadly at 'Dega or Daytona.

What's the answer? Beat's me. But the various sides of each issue are making it tough on NASCAR.

Tomorrow's race is on a Road Course - one of two such races each season.

An article on USA Today website - suggested that NASCAR should also run a race on a dirt track!

    Love to see that one!

My team (I never change) qualified WAY DOWN the list and none do great on these tracks.

But I'll stick with 'em. And we'll be back making 4 left turns ere long . .

For the ESPN contest (my first year) - I only change when we are forced - at each of the breaks!

Glory Bound, I can remember when the TV boys thought Jeff Gordon was the only racer on the track and the best thing to come along since Jesus. If one didn't know better, you would have thought this guy was the world's greatest NASCAR champion. Well, his star has fell somewhat, even though he won yesterday.
All my family are Earnhardt fans except my brother in Florida who is a Mark Martin fan. I personally have not watched a full race since Dale Sr. died. The excitement is gone. I really was never a NASCAR fan, only an Earnhardt fan.
I always root for Jr. or Michael Waldrip, but root for Martin when he has any kind of a chance.
I do think some of these new Nextel rules are "the pits"; no pun intended.

My team came in 4th, 7th, 11th, 18th and 30th even on the wobby track.

Well, after week #7, I am still in rarified air! Our little Nascar Challenge (where I start at the bottom and work hard through 13-15 weeks to make it to 50%) is finally working for me!

4 of my team made the top 12 in Sunday's race (July 11)

4 of my team made the top twelve today. [IMG] Although...two were 11 and 12. Was a bit suprised by my hero Johnson's performance at this race, or shall I say lack of it...
I should know better than to bother with Spencer, but I keep doing it anyhow. Think I'll give up on him and go with Gaughan as my new low point yet gonna suprise everyone one day pick. ;)
