The Redskins logo is a sense of pride to the Native American Tribe who created the team logo, the son of the designer says.

WASHINGTON — Changing Washington's NFL team logo is bittersweet for the family of the man who originally designed it.

The Washington Redskins announced Monday they will retire the Redskins nickname and logo. They have not yet selected a new name.

Washington's logo has been an Indian chief since 1971. It was designed by Native American Walter “Blackie” Wetzel to depict a member of the Blackfeet tribe.

Well, it's offensive to the sponsors. And those sponsors are a major source of income for the team (and the NFL).

And this is the United States, where capitalism, and free enterprise, are of vital importance.

I'm guessing the Confederate flag evokes "a sense of pride" for many, but that hasn't helped preserve it, has it?

And supporters of the Confederate flag also believe it's "not offensive," and refer to the change as "hard."

Oh, changing the name is just more politically correct pandering, believe me, the Redskin franchise has much more serious issues than the name. It's called Dan Snyder, who is probably the worst NFL owner of all. He has taken the franchise and run it into the ground, yet people think Jerry Jones is so bad.

Obama started whining about this several years ago, and at that time, Dan said no way he'd change the name. But that was before he wanted yet another new stadium built, he had a great GM and a decent head coach. No matter, at the end of last season. game tickets were going for four dollars.

Riverboat can not save them, Dan will meddle and cripple him, too. The NFL is corporate-fueled. and with the Washington whatever they are now, FedEx and Nike call the shots. Hmmm, one corporation is teeming with Teamsters, the other is essentially a Chinese company with all the underage slave labor they use. The NFL is no example of capitalism, it's corporatism in spades.

I wonder if the name is holding them back. Maybe if they change their name God will bless them and they will be as good as Detroit.

I will mention that 90% you stated - that poll is about 5 years old. But what has happened is that some of these "Unions" have told that "Redskins" is racist. Now, I doubt the average tribe member may not know why it is racist - but since the talking heads said it is - than it must be true.
Doesn't matter. It's offensive to white liberals, who are offended for them.

Oh, I see- offended by proxy
