Yesterday by Gods providence I by accident sat next to a group of united Methodist missionaries at the airport. Got into a chat with one of them and their def of evangelism is to love people, do good works, and live good lives as what they did on their missions trip. I asked her to read Mark 16:15 and challenged her with the example of Jesus, John the Baptist and such whom preached repentance from sin and Christ whom spoke often on Hell. What I said did not sink in but my question on how they were any different than unbelievers whom did the same silenced her and she had no response. The social gospel can't be orthodox.

I believe the united Methodist to be neo-orthodox. What's your understanding of the term? They may look to be Arminian but no Arminian could hold to such theology as Arminian are orthodox.

Neo-orthodoxy means "new orthodoxy". Historically speaking it means a return to belief in the Bible as the only valid revelation of God and a rejection of a person's experience as being revelatory. It was a backlash against the liberal Protestantism of the late 19th century. I have no idea what it means nowadays.

Plenty of unbelievers go on missions trips!! Do you think jw's and Mormons do nothing all year round? Okay John the Baptist preached repentance to the Jews but that's hrs context of where he lived and he would have done the same to Gentiles for they are all unbelievers.

Your first mistake was to assume there was anything evangelistic about United Methodist missions. It's not even on their radar.

Usually meant how one views the scriptures, as they would not hold them to be the very word of God as inerrant/inspired, but becomes such to us when the Holy Spirit "makes them come alive"

That opens up the can of worms as to whose interpratation is the right one, since not absolute truth when written down to us!

It's not too far off, though missing nuance. Of course its easy to identify Barth and Brunner and ignore everyone else. The discussion of inspiration is off, but that's usually normal with these things.

If you're interested in neo-orthodoxy, I'd encourage folks to check out the Evangelical Dictionary of Theology or a more thorough systematic theology.

Can't help but wonder who would hold closest to the true biblical concept of 'evangelism', you or them.
