Abraham Lincoln christened our town with the juice of a watermelon a few months before he became president.

Canned Air. At work, I have popped all the keys off and soaked them in palmolive. Then I take a alcohol swab to the rest.

How do you eat a Reese Cup?

No, I don't live in a house. But, if I did, I suppose I would.

Do you wash your car or have someone else do it?

I either wash it myself or go to a laser carwash - which is a machine. Doing it myself is cheaper.

    How was your mother's day?

(I took Jan out for supper last night - and for noon meal today - I think I'm spoiling her. Of course - having to live with me for the past 32 years - she and I both think that maybe she needs a little spoiling!!!)

Cool cats use catsup. Ketchup is still trying to ketch up to it.
Whatever the case, your topic brings to mind a distant memory. Different time, different place, when a discussion on this very topic got into a "versions" debate that was quite amusing. I can't sleep, so maybe I'll go look for it and post it here. It's VERY informative! LOL

That wasn't too hard..found it and edited it, so here it is. I'll ask my question at the bottom of this post.
    --------------------------

My wife says "Catsup" (cat-sup) and spells it that way.
I say "Ketchup" (catch-up) and spell it the right way.

On which side of the great divide are you?

p.s. I prefer Hunt's. It is not as acidic as some brands, a little sweeter, and the only problem with it is the "separation" issue.

Doesn't this sound like a great dividing point for Baptists?

    Dr. Bob Griffin
    -----------------------------------------
    Back home, it's pronounces *kaych-up*
I say it like you, *catch-up*

I like Hunts, but prefer Heinz.

    -------------------------------------------------
You can't actually pronounce it cats-up! That's just evil! Are you SURE she's Baptist? You guys need to have a heart to heart...
    Calli
    -------------------------------------------------

I'm afraid I have to agree with Cal and Ida. And here I thought your wife was the "normal" one of the relationship! I don't even want to know how she pronounces Echinacea.

    -------------------------------------------------
I prefer hintz(sp).. dont care how you say it...
    -------------------------------------------------
Heinz is the best and it is Ketchup!

    -------------------------------------------------
... here, I'll paste some history.

Word History: The word ketchup exemplifies the types of modifications that can take place in borrowing both of words and substances. The source of our word ketchup may be the Malay word k[e]chap, possibly taken into Malay from the Cantonese dialect of Chinese. K[e]chap, like ketchup, was a sauce, but one without tomatoes; rather, it contained fish brine, herbs, and spices. Sailors seem to have brought the sauce to Europe, where it was made with locally available ingredients such as the juice of mushrooms or walnuts.

At some unknown point, when the juice of tomatoes was first used, ketchup as we know it was born. But it is important to realize that in the 18th and 19th centuries ketchup was a generic term for sauces whose only common ingredient was vinegar. The word is first recorded in English in 1690 in the form catchup, in 1711 in the form ketchup, and in 1730 in the form catsup. All three spelling variants of this foreign borrowing remain current. --dictionary.com

    -------------------------------------------------
Uh oh. Is this going to turn into a "versions" debate? I'll have to go with the 1690 version please. The rest appear to be perverted translations of the original word, and the actual product a watered down version of what the original was. If the word originated in China, why are we translating what was brought from Europe? It's a clear parallel to the Antioch/Alexandrian manuscript debate, and I for one am shocked and appalled that Dr. Bob would allow such a thing to be dividing his home. Shame on you Dr.!

    -------------------------------------------------
    To continue my allegory . . .

Del Monte Ketchup is too tart and thin in texture
Heinz Ketchup is too acidic and bitter
Hunts is just the right sweetness, even though you have to shake the bottle to be sure it is not separated.

They ALL use the basic same ingredients, but with slight variations in amount, cooking, etc. Because one has a little more vinegar than corn syrup and another has the opposite, is one "correct"?

These seem to be preferences, not convictions.

BUT . . . the real issue is still what "version" is correct. Catsup (1730) or Ketchup (1711)? Obviously the older version should seem to be the better, but all my KJVonly friends teach that such is NOT true.

Webster says "catsup" and "catchup" are a "variation" of ketchup. Which implies that the REAL word is ketchup. There are more on the shelf in the grocery that say ketchup than catsup. Does the weight of evidence prove what is right?

And now, in my pantry, I've discovered that the bottle says "Tomato Catsup". Since tomatoes were not even an ingredient in the original, are all the bottles really "modern perversions" of the true product?

    Dr. Bob Griffin
    -------------------------------------------------
    Dr. Bob:

"Catsup" is the original KJV word. It remained that way until it was revised in 1769. At that time, a bunch of sprinkled, unbaptized "whiskey-palians" changed the word to "Ketchup".

The original Greek word for Ketchup is "como se llama" and is used over 35 times in the New Testament. One instance of ketchup is found in the book of Genesis. Perhaps you remember the 3 men who came to Abraham, and one of them was the Angel of the Lord. Well, Abraham fixed these 3 visitors a meal, but before the angel of the Lord would eat it he asked for Ketchup. Abraham exclaimed "Me gusta mucho".

Gotta go. I don't spend a lot of my time on this worldly internet stuff. I basically just read the Bible and pray about 36 hours each day.

    Stephen

    -------------------------------------------------
The pronunciation is determined by the spelling on the bottle. I personally like Brooks myself. Once I grabed the low sodium Hunts and it was nasty. BLAH! I do not recommend it.
It is all about Christ :0)

    -------------------------------------------------
lets make this division really widen up... have you ever tried GREEN stuff??

now they even have green tobasco sauce.... where will it end?

    -------------------------------------------------
They have green AND purple out here. Both, in a blind taste test, cannot be differentiated. But that, my friends, is the point! To those who can see, whose eyes are opened to the truth, you can see which one is real and which is not, and the false ones just don't taste right.
    Calli

    -------------------------------------------------

I say "catch-up" but spell it "catsup". The best catsup I've ever had was homeade. The recipe came from my mother-in-law. My dad who had a very corny sense of humor called it "cats soup".

    -------------------------------------------------

Even when spelled "catsup," it's supposed to be pronounced "catchup."

Of course, the issue is avoided entirely by using Heinz chili sauce instead.

Reese's Cup is the brand name for a piece of candy that is made of peanut butter covered in chocolate. (My favorite ketchup is Heinz).

I like hot dogs "all the way," meaning with chile, slaw, mustard, and onion. What do you like on yours?

When I eat them, which is rare, I slather them in mustard. Nothing else. If I'm at a fair, I might get a chili and cheese dog, but only if the chili has no beans.

Yes, it's hard to keep the check book balanced, when it's a joint checking account, and one person has a really irritating habbit of withdrawing money from the ATM without letting the "checkbook" know.
