I have been wondering. God will someday create a new heaven and a new earth. What purpose will the new earth serve? Will that be our home for eternity?

Matthew 5:5 says that the meek shall inherit the earth. To whom is that referring, and will they live on the new earth for eternity?

It will be the re-creation of the earth as we know it without the stain of sin. It will be our home, Christ will be King, and Thoecracy will be the world government. I would suggest Heaven by Randy Alcorn...excellent read

So when we speak of spending eternity in heaven, we are actually referring to the New Earth? Another thing is that there will be no sea on the that earth. Rev. 21:1

Ultimately...yes. Since that has not taken place yet, there is an "intermediate" Heaven where believers go today when they die.
When looking at Rev. 21:1, one must consider the context that in those days the sea was a horrifying place due to primitive travel and quick striking storms that basically came out of nowhere (still occurs to this day). I don't believe the earth will look as it does today, but how it exists today is not how it looked pre-flood, either. There will be oceans, but the expanse between continents will not be as vast. Whales, sharks and other ocean animals are all part of God's "good" creation, and they will continue to exist on the New Earth. We know what earth is...it has mountains, land, oceans, beaches, jungles, etc. New Earth will be the same without the stain of sin.

It is evident, then, that in the prophetical idiom and manner of speech, by heavens and earth, the civil and religious state and combination of men in the world, and the men of them, were often understood. So were the heavens and earth that world which then was destroyed by the flood.

4. On this foundation I affirm that the heavens and earth here intended in this prophecy of Peter, the coming of the Lord, the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men, mentioned in the destruction of that heaven and earth, do all of them relate, not to the last and final judgment of the world, but to that utter desolation and destruction that was to be made of the Judaical church and state

'First, There is the foundation of the apostle's inference and exhortation, seeing that all these things, however precious they seem, or what value soever any put upon them, shall be dissolved, that is, destroyed; and that in that dreadful and fearful manner before mentioned, in a day of judgment, wrath, and vengeance, by fire and sword; let others mock at the threats of Christ's coming: He will come- He will not tarry; and then the heavens and earth that God Himself planted, -the sun, moon, and stars of the Judaical polity and church, -the whole old world of worship and worshippers, that stand out in their obstinancy against the Lord Christ, shall be sensibly dissolved and destroyed: this we know shall be the end of these things, and that shortly

Isa 65:17 KJV - 17 For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.

Randy Alcorn's book Heaven, is for the most part convoluted, confusing non-sense. This appears to be more so called "Christian fiction". Either that or Isaiah was a misinformed prophet.
