new laptop

I bought a new HP 2000 notebook with a AMD processor, bottom line cheapo PC if you will. I will not make that mistake again. My old Acer laptop died on me, but I loved it, it worked real well compared to this HP junktop. However I wonder what the difference is caused by.

My troubles are slow Internet page loads. Also when I type anything on or offline I have to type very very slowly because it always misses letters if I type to fast. And I can't even type fast. Fastest ever in HS typing class about 30 words per min. Also the touchpad is way too sensitive, this could be Windows 8--which I hate.

Do you think it is going from Intel to AMD that is my issue? Or is it HP? Or Windows 8?

Wow, I'm using an HP2000 right now, and before that I had a little Acer too. :thumbsup:

Mine was also very slow in Windows Explorer, but I downloaded Google Chrome and it is very fast, not sure why, but it makes a BIG difference.

I didn't like Windows 8 at first, but now I am used to it.

I don't use the touchpad much, I agree, it is not the best. I bought a mouse, well worth it.

It's been a pretty good PC for me so far.

Example, for me to type this reply I had to wait at lest 6-9 seconds for the cursor to allow me to type. I had to go back 4 times and insert missing letters that didn't show even though I typed each stroke deliberately slow.

Yes, mine has the AMD processor, whatever that means. :tongue3:

I am not real knowledgeable about processors and other computer features. I bought mine about 3 or 4 months ago and it came with Windows 8.

Mine is not slow typing whatsoever and does not skip letters. Mine types just fine and I can probably type about 50 words per minute.

Try Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, it makes a tremendous difference, but I am not sure why. My default homepage was MSN. Very slow as you have said.

I uninstalled Norton when it ran out, I think that speeded things up too, I use Avast now and it works well.

Thanks for the replies. I type real slow, probably less than 20 words per. This happens online or in a word processor, no difference. Don't think it is malware since it was like this from the start. I should have returned it, but thought I was just having issues getting used to Windows 8.

I like mine very much, although I do know what you mean by the touchpad. I prefer to use a mouse.

I would still recommend Chrome or Firefox. I do not know why the Explorer on this model is so slow, but it is. I have become a big fan of Chrome, it seems the fastest to me.

I think Norton slows it down too, too invasive.

The Realtek Audio on this thing is not loud, but I found out how to get far more output on it if you are interested.

Internet Explorer is slow and laggy, but Chrome and Firefox are not ... possibly there are "add-ons" in IE that are causing it to not work properly. In your Internet Explorer window, at the top right, there's a gear (or some people call it a flower); click on that and you'll get menu options; choose "Manage Add-ons." You'll get a new list of everything that Internet Explorer runs when it starts up.

There's a couple of other things to consider; but I need to do some research first.

I agree. The first thing I do when I buy a computer is to dump Norton or McAfee and install AVG free. I have always found Norton or McAfee to slow everything down.

I have the exact same one and I have none of those problems.

Amd is the manufacturer as opposed to intel and has nothing to do with your problem, though the speed of the processor could. Since others have the same unit and are not having problems processor speed is not your problem either.

It sounds like you have problems with the computer. Malware can slow things down. Be sure that windows defender is operating - open it and have it scan your hard drive.

As to browsers, some are slightly faster than others but would not give the problems you seem to be having. Explorer is known for slowness, I use Firefox because it is functional and I like how it works. I've tried Chrome, Opera and others and all work nicely, they just don't operate like firefox so I don't like them :smilewinkgrin: Even different versions of the same browser can have differing speeds.

The entry of text being slow is another problem. If Defender doesn't help with that I would contact service and see if they can help or return it to the place of purchase if local and get another.

As to the touch pad, go to control panel/mouse and often there are adjustments for the touch pad, give those a try if you find any.

Touch pads are kind of like touchy people - some you can get along with and others - well a hammer works on touch pads :thumbsup:

A wireless mouse might be a better option, they have them that have a usb device you stick in. It is very small and barely sticks out of the usb slot and is not a problem on laptops. Amazon has them fairly cheap.

Go to http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003QH2MY6/?tag=baptis04-20 and on the right side of the mouse is the portion that goes into the usb.

ALSO, if your rig has bluetooth, a bluetooth mouse would be nicer as there is nothing to plug into and take up a usb port.

To add to that, in the control panel, often you have a setting to turn off the touch pad, if not, in control panel/device manager you will find the touch pad listed (right click on it and then choose properties I think it is) and there should be a disable feature there.

Edit: Just looked up the specs on your machine and it isn't a speed demon but you shouldn't be having that type of problems. It should be a fairly good all around machine for general use. Some of the newer slower processors are actually kind of shocking in how fast they are

I had screen degeneration problems with a new HP laptop a few years ago.
Their service was not helpful at all.
I ended up buying another laptop 3 months afterwards.
I've resolved to never-again purchase any HP products.

Thanks, I checked Windows Defender and I get a window stating it and Norton are disabled. I cannot figure out how to enable it?

I uninstalled Norton on mine several weeks ago, but try going to the Search charm (magnifying glass) and type in Norton. All Norton apps should pop up and you should be able to enable it.

Click on the Settings charm (gear) and then Control Panel at top. Click on System and Security, then Review your computer's status. You should be able to enable Defender and Norton there.
