My church is with southern Baptist convention , we have a dilemma at our church right our temporary pastor at the moment is attending seminary and he is doing such a fantastic job , he is truly on fire for The Lord . We had a business meeting last week and the subject came up about choosing Deacons and a pastor , someone made a comment that The Southern Baptist Convention does not allow a man who has been divorced and remarried to hold the position of pastor or deacon well we looked around and it seems all of the men except one had been married , divorced, and remarried to their second wife and who have been married for than 30 years . So one of the gentleman in our meeting said that if anyone of these men wanted to be a deacon he would vote against them . I would love to know what Jesus would say about this . I believe that Jesus sees our hearts and knows how times have changed, so many people have been divorced and remarried, I’m praying that The Lord will lead us and guide us to do His will and only His will . We strive for unity in our church not division , and it seems that the enemy is really attacking our Church and we must stand strong in The Lord He doesn’t want division in The Church he wants unity and love , He wants us to be a light in this dark world . I trust that God is moving in our lives and drawing us nearer to Him . God is in control of all things I know his timing is perfect and I trust His will , will be done in this situation .

Jenny, that induvial who made that statement is WRONG!!! - (and yes, I am a pastor of a SBC church) Do you have a copy of the Baptist Faith and Message? If not, click on this link for the full copy. The BF&M says nothing about divorced pastors! That decision, as with several other doctrines, is left up to the local church. Granted in the past - that belief was wildly held by virtually all SBC pastors - but many have come to the conclusion that the Bible is not talking about divorce - rather polygamy. It is good that your church does not want division - but we need to go by what the Bible says and not just tradition or "We've always done it that way". Hope this helps.

That's actully one of the FAQs on the denomination's official website:

Frequently Asked Qustions - SBC.net

Click on:

Can a divorced person serve as a pastor or deacon, conduct baptisms, or serve the Lord’s Supper in a Southern Baptist church?

to get an explanation of the matter (like Salty's summary above),

concluding with: "each Baptist church decides for itself....there is no single 'Baptist' position on this issue. Each local church determines for itself its interpretation of Scripture to this issue."
