I see nothing wronto pray for the immediate release of a marine in a Mexican prisong with keeping your congregation up to date on things like Pastor Saeed in a Iranian prison! Or letting your church know about a bill to ban gay marriage! Or an update on Hobby Lobby and their case against birth control! Or the immediate release of a marine in a Mexican prison! Or to pray for the 500 Nigerian girls kidnapped and being held hostage by Boko Horan! Or to pray for African Christian and Iraqi Christian being persecuted for their faith. Or to raise the awareness of Samaritans Purse to collect shoeboxes for Christmas. Or about school vacinations offered for free. Or food stamp and other low income assistances for those who are in the cogregation or know of someone in that catagorey. In fact, it is not wrong to pray for the homeless and the needy in our nation! Or to mention places members can go to volunteer to help at missions!
I have a sneaky suspicion that liberal believers have no problem when their church uses the pulpit to support same-gender marriage; or HIV/Aids mission work around the world? Or to support the end of wars in place like Iraq ad Afghanistan? Or to talk about need to support global warming issues. And I know many liberal churches spoke with great concern when Sarah Palin was running for VP.
We all know that the Rev's Al Shaprton and Jesses Jackson and Jeremiah Wright use the pulpit as a bully pulpit, but because they lean a little left, it must be okay!
Again, it is our responsibity as pastors to keep our congregations informed of Biblical issues as well as social concerns and how the two are intertwined. I do not believe that Romans 12:2, "Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect." Is a directive or mandate to not keep the church in the dark when it comes to work issues!
I think public and political issues are going to be part of the pulpit, and it can be prayerfully and tastefully intertwined with the Biblical message, without making members in the congregation feel uncomfortable, or think they have to vote one way or another!

In closing, I do not support the church going so far as to invite politicans to church services in order to introduce them and let them say a word or two. And while I was curious and mildly interested in Rick Warrens debate between McCain and Obama at his church, I think that is an overreach of the ministry! That was going a little too far! Still, it was a good debate, and people should have seen what Obama was going to be like when he stated he couldn't answer a c=question as it was beyond his pay grade.
People, everything Obama deflects and ignores must be beyond his pay grade! We did get what we voted for.
