New version of the Bible is no easy creation

I cannot imagine how hard it must be. One night at church we were given a set of Greek words and several verses, in Greek, to translate. It was extremely hard and no two people came out with the same words in English. Read the entire article.

"I was stoned," the apostle Paul says in a popular translation of the New Testament.

The passage is meant to describe how the apostle of Jesus was attacked by his enemies as he spread the gospel.

Some readers might see another meaning, though: Getting high on drugs. And so, a group of translators and Zondervan -- the Grand Rapids-based publisher of the New International Version (NIV) Bible -- changed it in 2002 to: "I was pelted with stones."

It was one of hundreds of updates made for a new line of Bibles called Today's New International Version (TNIV).

Don't take that to the BVT forum or you'll find yourself being pelted with stones.

Having done a lot of word studies in the NT I can attest to the difficulty of translating Grrek, much less Hebrew. One word in Greek can sometimes only be translated as a phrase because of the idea of the word... and then it can used several different ways. >.<

I do not envy those who take up the task of translating the bible. Not only does the job take skill and forethought but a lot of ongoing prayer.

The easiest thing in the world is to make up one's own gospel. The hardest thing in the world is to believe the gospel we already have. That's why Jesus tells us that few will be saved.
