New York and Vermont Seek to Impose a Retroactive Climate Tax

These actions by the state governments of New York and Vermont are ridiculous.

"Energy producers will be subject to retroactive taxes in New York if the state assembly passes Senate Bill S2129A, known as the “Climate Change Superfund Act.” The superfund legislation seeks to impose a retroactive tax on energy companies that have emitted greenhouse gases (GHGs) and operated within the state over the last seventy years.

If passed, the new law will impose $75 billion in repayment fees for “historical polluters,” who lawmakers assert are primarily responsible for climate change damages within the state. The state will “assign liability to and require compensation from companies commensurate with their emissions” over the last “70 years or more.” The bill would establish a standard of strict liability, stating that “companies are required to pay into the fund because the use of their products caused the pollution. No finding of wrongdoing is required.”

New York is not alone in this effort. Superfunds built on retroactive taxes on GHG emissions are becoming increasingly popular. Vermont recently enacted similar legislation, S.259 (Act 122), titled the “Climate Superfund Act,” in which the state also retroactively taxes energy producers for historic emissions. Similar bills have also been introduced in Maryland and Massachusetts.
...
Fossil fuel companies enabled GHG emissions, of course, but they also empowered significant growth, mobility, and prosperity.

Finally, establishing a standard in which “no finding of wrongdoing is required” to levy fines against historical actions that were (and still are) legally permitted sets a dangerous precedent for what governments can do, not only to businesses that have produced fossil fuels but also to individuals who have consumed them."

It’s a good thing that they limited the tax to energy companies…

…politicians have been emitting a lot of hot air recently.

I think it is so sad that both the Biden and Trump families are allowing those two elderly men to run for president in 2024. They need to have a talk with them and "take away the keys."
There is too much money & power at stake. Grandpa Biden just bought another ocean front house in Delaware for $10 million in cash. He should have bought an assistance living house in Shady Pines with a Jazzy electric mobility device. Where Trump has a NY penitentiary awaiting him and all the orange jumpsuits he could imagine wearing. I’m still wondering why Putin hasn’t chemically Poisoned both of them but then I don’t play in those circles. Maybe RFK Jr can make it into the WH after all…. Who knows, then he could exercise his full term abortion agenda and go straight to hell for allowing murder on his watch. Either way, I’m done with politics and most organized religions.

At their ages, not being spring chickens anymore, one has to wonder if either Biden or Trump, or neither, will make it to election day. I wish no ill will toward either - maybe they will live to be a hundred - but unless Christ returns first, we all must die at some point. And then for either one of them to make it all the way to January 20, 2029 - in which case, at a minimum, they will both continue to get older with the accompanying deterioration with age - is even more problematic. Anyone voting for Biden or Trump needs to consider that they might really be, in essence, voting for their vice presidential running mate.

Granted… and we don’t know who’s running mate hasn’t been determined. I kinda wish they would dust off Pompeo.

I would like Trump to pick Doug Burgum. He is pro-oil and so am I. My dad worked for an oil company, I worked for an oil company(3 summers during college in the oil field and 39 years as an accountant), and my pension and retiree health benefits come from an oil company.

With a little luck, all the energy producers in NY will declare bankruptcy, shut their doors and cease production of energy.

Then the state legislature can provide electricity with their “good intentions”.

peace to you
