New York City Could See 6-Foot Sea Rise, Tripling of Heat Waves by 2100

Poor New York ... poor all coastal communities.

Heat waves and floods caused by climate change could mean disaster for the Big Apple's five boroughs by the end of the century, with sea levels now predicted by a new report to climb by as much as 6 feet by 2100.

According to the New York City Panel on Climate Change, an independent body composed of climate scientists, New York could see a 6-foot increase under a worst-case scenario that has been revised from previous estimates that 2 to 4 feet would be the maximum rise.

The report also marked a new estimate for how hot it could become within the next 80 or so years, with the panel projecting a temperature increase as much as 8.8 degrees Fahrenheit and a tripling in the frequency of heat waves by the 2080s in the city.

The report noted that temperatures in Central Park climbed at a rate of 0.3 F per decade from 1900 to 2013, totaling a 3.4 F rise, but the panel expects those figures to soar, with an increase of 4.1 to 5.7 F by the 2050s and 5.3 to 8.8 F by the 2080s.

The frequency of extreme precipitation is expected to jump, as well, with about 1½ times more events per year possible by the 2080s, the report said.

Coastal communities, like many on Staten Island and in low-lying Brooklyn and Queens, could be in particular jeopardy, with storms likely to alter local beaches and coastlines. To date, the city has already dumped 26,000 linear feet of sand along Staten Island's shorelines, for instance, but that number could pale in comparison with future adaptation needs, the report said.

I do not make it a practice to gamble, but I will bet anyone $20 it does not happen.

(I should add that I have never lost a bet.)

Well, you won't be out the $20 here as I doubt anyone on the BB will be alive by 2100.

Some may make it to 2050, but not many of us. If I make it to 2050 I will be one of the oldest folk alive on earth.

If I lose, send the bill to my next-of-kin.

Of course, when I win, $20 will only buy a soda.

[re: year 2100] I don't know....$20 is about 500,000 Rials. Might be able to buy a bag of figs with that. If the Ayatollah will allow you to buy and sell.

We've heard all this before.

Being so wrong in the past hasn't slowed down the global warming harlots one bit.

Upstate New York has had 22 days of sub-zero weather since the first of the year. Of course we all know that it always gets colder when it gets warmer. :BangHead:

Flooding most of New York City would do billions of dollars of improvements. Pray for the fish.

Why is New York hogging all the future heat waves ?

I'm betting the heat waves don't bother them, being's they'll be under all that water.

I hope the whole darn place sinks into the ocean:smilewinkgrin:

You know why New Yorkers are always angry? Because the light at the end of their tunnel is Weehawken. Or Jersey City. Either one will do.

Not if it falls into the Atlantic....then its ocean front.

Personally I think they are all savages east of route 287...take it all out as far as I'm conserned, just don't eat the fish.

New Yorkers would just raise the rents and call themselves the Venice of the empire state. It looks as if climate change means urban renewal for NYC.

They already do those things....who is king though....Deblasio or Wall Street?

Yeah, NYC already has high rents. You are a lot closer to them than I am so I can only guess but I think that Deblasio and Wall Street are already both under water, no doubt due to global warming or climate change.

But, but it's not liquid water. Yes you are correct. This is very confusing in light of the Global Warming theory (oops I meant to say climate change theory).

Crabbie needs to find another example of a catastrophe instead of NYC or California. Crabbie is saying that the oceans are going to rise nearly an inch a year until the turn of the century. And then he wants to take up a collection from the poorest people in the world for the richest city in the world.

Maybe earth will finally return to her pre-Ice Age condition. The oceans that were trapped in the polar ice cap will finally be free! Perhaps we will finally be free from these ice age loving climate changers who want to keep us trapped in this unnatural state.

That is an outstanding observation.
