New York Governor Says Trying Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, 4 Others In New York 'A Decision I Would Not Have Made'

Gov. David Paterson openly criticized the White House on Monday, saying he thought it was a terrible idea to move alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other suspected terrorists to New York for trial.

"This is not a decision that I would have made. I think terrorism isn't just attack, it's anxiety and I think you feel the anxiety and frustration of New Yorkers who took the bullet for the rest of the country," he said.
Paterson's comments break with Democrats, who generally support the President's decision.

Having been listening to the arguments I think that a military tribunal would be best for this trial rather than the regular court system. It could be a rather complicated trial with the need for sensitive intelligence evidence to be presented. This would lend itself to being better handled by a military tribunal.

Methinks that this is a no-brainer for this administration - IMHO, this is exactly the desired result.

These new court buildings that these people are usually tried in were built in the 90's, when Gingrich & co. were shutting down the government and everyone was complaining about govt. "waste" and blaming it squarely on "social programs"; yet these buildings are like royal palaces inside with marble halls, brass doorknobs and all the other extravagance. I wondered why they would even build this stuff here after the '93 attack, and then the buildings and later the entire streets around them had to be put on permanent lockdown (I used to have to go in one of them to get tax forms, and in another I sometimes went to the cafeteria, and one was built with storefronts that were never used for stores because of the fears) and all the fear everytime one of these people is tried.

All of this would have been solved; if they had built somewhere else (if they really had to build in the first place). Like upstate or something. Too bad Governor's Island (which is in the harbor) wasn't yet available. That would be out of the way.

I would tend to agree with you were it not for the message it sends by trying him in Untied States District Court. It shows our commitment to American justice and avoids the negative baggage of a military commission. Keep in mind that Khalid Shaikh Mohammed is already under indictment in the Southern District of New York for his involvement in the Bojinka plot. So, that grand jury indictment needs to be dealt with at some point. As far as the intelligence matter, I see your point but so much time has elapsed that the sensitive information and the methods used to otain such will be outdated.

I tend to take a lot of interest in legal matters as I'm currently working on a Political Science degree and hope to go to law school after and fulfil my life-long dream of becoming an attorney.

Personally, I think military tribunals should have taken place as soon as there was enough evidence to convict, or a plan to either keep 'em as prisoners of war or repatriation to some country which would receive them or place them on a life time of probationary surveilance. The longer we incarcerate someone without charges or trying them, the less credible our position appears and the more it looks like just a fishing expedition hoping to find or grow evidence. Because we have delayed so long in bringing these folks to justice, and because we have had an administration which has released so much inuendo regarding their interogation during captivity, I think the public court system will be a circus which will try us even more than it trys and convicts them.... if such can be the outcome.

After that , the Bush administration should have begun the trials immediately. Starting with KSM.

Life without the possibility of parole would be great. No martyrdom for these Muslims, although a death sentence would be justice.

Also, they should not be locked away for 24 hours a day, I think hard labor would be the ticket. Maybe they could make American flags to sell with the proceeds going to the medical expenses for those American soldiers wounded in battle.
