I don't deny that they've been using it as an educational tool - compassion is a part of AIDS (or any other terminal or stigmatized condition) education, but a pamphlet that is about compassion seems to have little to do with health, at least not in a medical sense, which is what I was getting at.

I, too, would like to see the actual pamphlet, but I'm not really asking you for it, Sue - I know you have the same information we have. It's just that from that information, we've come to different uninformed conclusions. [IMG]

Do you have the same problem with them when they're defending freedom of religious speech on the part of Christians? Or defending churches on search-and-seizure issues?

Personally, I am amazed that a state agency would print something like that. And I am concerned that the unacceptableness of it is not more widely recognized among Baptists, who after all more or less invented this separation of church and state thing. Makes me grateful for the BJCPA. (For the Brits, that's "Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs", which lobbies for the old Baptist ideals in Washington and has recently lost most if not all of it's Southern Baptist funding (we ABCers still give, of course).

not a card-carrying ACLUer but glad they're there

</font>[/QUOTE]Thank you rsr! We had a tornado in our town yesterday afternoon and were without power until sometime during the middle of the night; so I wasn't able to look for any additional info.

But none of this has anything to do with whether the state acted correctly in distributing the pamphlet.

Given the synposis, the pamphlet appears to promote Christian teachings. Not just that, a particular interpretation of Christian teachings.

The ACLU's stance on other issues has no bearing on whether it is right or wrong in this case. If they're right, they're right.

I would recommend some refresher readings of John Leland.

I must be hanging out with the wrong "crowd," huh?

I understood that you were merely presenting a link and I did not think for a moment that you were actually agreeing with me. [IMG]

The state not only distributed the pamphlets. It BOUGHT the pamphlets in the first place. :D

Thanks again for the link. [IMG]

Lucky fellow - my parents had to pay for mine (Salesian College, Farnborough. But yes, there are state funded ones too.

I still don't see what all the fuss is about; our Baptist forebears were very hot on the separation of Church and State, which is all I think the ACLU is insisting upon.

    Yours in Christ

We present day Baptists are still for separation of church and state. Let's keep the state out of church affairs.....not the other way around.

The church never hurts the state, the government is the one who hurts the church.

If there were more church in the government maybe we could return to being a truly Christian nation.

The founders were clear that it worked both ways. They thought that giving either power over the other would tend to corrupt both.

ITA. I'm not talking about power. I'm talking about working together. We have a Christian President in office. Don't you think the government, as a whole, could stand a little more moral influence?

We've had Christians presidents who were pretty immoral. We've also had religiously ambiguous presidents who were pretty moral.

Let's not forget that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson truly were "fathers" of the country.

Well, The Squire, has spoken! [IMG] Closing time. But no doubt the antics of the ACLU will return in another thread very shortly. ;)
