NHL Lockout Thread

    As many as 250 locked-out NHL players, many with million-dollarcontracts, have scattered across Europe to play in national hockey leagues. Some 30 NHL players are skating in the U.S minor leagues. They are all getting paid a fraction of what they'd earn in the NHL.

    The most lucrative of the European leagues is the Russian Super League, where the best players command as much as $3 million per season. Elsewhere on the Continent stars play for $300,000 a year. In the U.S. minors it's much worse. Players get as little as $500 a week.

    Our area papers have switched to covering the minors (AHL and ECHL) but mainly just the stats, not much game coverage.

    We have some local college hockey on tele. Thankfully we have Denver nearby and they are a good program and play Wisocnsin, Minnesota, Duluth, North Dakota, etc

    A look at the NHL lockout through Saturday, Dec. 18:

    TOTAL DAYS OF LOCKOUT: 94.
    TOTAL DAYS OF SEASON MISSED: 67.
    TOTAL GAMES MISSED: 449.

    NEGOTIATIONS: The NHL rejected a players' association proposal and had its own counteroffer turned down during a 31/2-hour session on Dec. 14.

    No new talks are scheduled.
