In my library I have the 2006 hardback edition of the NIV Archaeological Study Bible. I purchased this study bible used.

I also have the Kindle version on my desktop computer.

Yesterday I began to thumb thru the hardback edition, laying on a wood chest in my study. I noticed the front dedication page has the autograph in ink of Dr. Walter C. Kaiser, Jr. with a reference to Psalm 119:160.

This peaked my interest in Dr. Walter C. Kaiser, Jr., who turned 87 last month.

At this point in my library I have the NIV (1984) Archaeological Study Bible (2006) in hardback edition and Kindle edition, and the NIV (2011) Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible in hardback edition.

I have always found Dr. Kaiser to be a very reliable scholar. The first book I ever read by Dr. Kaiser was Toward an Exegetical Theology: Biblical Exegesis for Preaching and Teaching way back in 1981.

I noticed in the bibliography of Toward an Exegetical Theology: Biblical Exegesis for Preaching and Teaching (1981, page 249, bibliography section: Exegetical Methodology) that Dr. Kaiser includes a reference to F. F. Bruce: "The Earliest Old Testament Interpretations", (1972, Analysis of OT interpretation in the Prophets and Psalm Titles).

Can you share any words about what may have been Bruce's thoughts in that 1972 reference?

Sorry I can't be of much help on that. Even though I am very familiar with many works by F. F. Bruce, I have never read that one. I pulled my copy of Toward off the shelf in order to refresh my memory and found Bruce in the bibliography (only one citation). I next checked the author index and found that Bruce was not quoted in the book.

I had FF Bruce old and NT Introductions, and he was solid in ther NT, but help to more of the critical views on the OT!
