'No one should ever underestimate the speaker': How Pelosi won the shutdown battle

Now — just weeks after reclaiming the speaker's gavel — the California Democrat has already bested President Donald Trump in a gut-wrenching fight that may help define the 116th Congress, while strengthening her hold over rank-and-file lawmakers.

Trump surrendered to Pelosi and Schumer in astonishing fashion Friday after insisting for 35 straight days that he would never reopen the government without winning on his central 2016 campaign promise: a big, beautiful border wall between the United States and Mexico.

But just as she did with her Democratic critics weeks ago, Pelosi waited Trump out until he couldn’t take the heat anymore. Amid a wave of news stories on furloughed federal workers showing up at food banks or in unemployment lines, airports across the country facing slowdowns, thousands of IRS employees who weren't returning to the job when ordered back without pay — or, perhaps more so, the public blaming him for the chaos - Trump wilted. Pelosi held firm.

Both should have "wilted" before shutting down the government. They are childish and this was nothing but a childish political stunt.

Trump shut down the government. Nobody else.

And he should have been man enough and taken that responsibility from the get go. He should have also held firm and not relent to the Dems. Yes, Trump wimped out and there is no sugar coating it.

Actually, Trump did what he had to do, bring attention to just how stupid and Trump obsessed The ems were, and he will still get his wall built, just will take longer! The public now fully realizes that there was NO attempt by the Dems to govern by discussion and compromise, just stuck their heads in the sand!

I disagree. It was necessary by Trump and Pelosi just want to oppose him no matter what. People voted for Trump because they believed him to be a fighter. This is just a 3 week pause. It aint over yet.

I agree with the last part, and even somewhat with the first. We are accustomed to government shutdowns being a political pawn. But I have seen how hard it has been for many who are trying to do their best to provide for their families. The guys at the federal prisons in my area are not making top dollar. Many are living paycheck to paycheck.

There has to be a better way than telling underpaid persons they have to work without pay until the mess is sorted out.

I mean, he's the President. Can't he arrange accidentally leave Pelosi behind the next time they go to Afghanistan?

Round ONE is over - Monday 1/28 the fighters come out of there respective corners - round TWO begins.

2/15 - The fight goes to the courts, ultimately the SCOTUS.

Pelosi is a gutter-street fighter. She will stab you in the back in a heartbeat. You don't get the Margaret Sanger Award for being a nice person.

Except the people were hurt with no payoff. I know you could care less about them but it matters. The President shut down the government and then reopened it without anything being gained. The wall could still happen but those people endured hardship for no reason because we are back where we started. He may win the wall war but he sacrificed the people in the first battle. This wasn’t a great look no matter what happens next.

It’s about time we stop meddling with the lives of those who prop up this country over partisan battles. They don’t get a choice in whether or not their sacrifice is for something that they believe in. It’s self destructive and embarrassing as a country.

Yes, like failed Obamacare messed up our lives - my premium went from $17.00/month to $106.00/month

"we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what's in it".

"If you like your doctor..." My doctor was changed 3 times and my healthcare facility was also changed against my wishes.

It will save you $$... my premium went from $17.00/month to $106.00/month

etc, etc...

Policies obviously affect people’s lives. I’m talking about the practice of squeezing those that support out Government as political leverage. Both sides do this and it needs to stop.

Everyone got paid for no work and no wall. Schumer is not going to allow a wall. I agree that it is time to leave Syria and Afghanistan, and I would leave Germany, too.

Pelosi's showboat behavior reminds me of this long haired fighter:
Ha ha ha... love it!

Agreed!

Admittedly President Trump took ownership of the shutdown publicly on television.

Hopefully it was a learning experience.

Along with $$ for the wall (or immediately afterwards) legislation should be passed DISALLOWING the shutdown of the government!

America has a 21 trillion dollar national debt. Allowing a slush fund to cover the shutdown interim caused by the incompetence of the powerless congress to establish a budget should not be a big problem (if we can get them back into the building to vote).
