Nuclear Option

OLD SARGE

Just so we are clear, the Democrats are overriding the will of the people so it is time for the GOP to use the nuclear option or they are complicit in the tragedy of the shutdown. If they do not, everyone one of them should be replaced

I don’t like the idea. The Senate is structured to force compromise unless a party has 60 vote super majority.

Better idea. Forbid the use of “continuing resolutions” and force the budget process to be finished by October 1st, otherwise every congressman and Senator (as well as their staff) forfeits their pay for the next year.

Peace to you

I would prefer that it didn't happen if it can be avoided.

At the same time, I do believe that the democrats aren't above nuking the filibuster as soon as they take back control. Remember, their presidential candidate last year didn't hide the fact that she intended to pack the supreme court if she got in office.

I agree, for a different reason. The parties are so divided I do not see either compromising. Ladt time the GOP shut down the government. This time it was the DNC. I say let the controlling party have its way and settle it at the next election.

The reason I say a different reason is those Democrats are not elected to represent the nation. They represent those in their states or districts. If they were elected to stand against certain policies, or to force certain policies, then they are doing their job (that is why the GOP shut down the government last time).

Humans are suffering so we need to end this.
Citizens are far too dependent on Federal tax dollars to supplement their lives.

The politicians don’t have the will to be fiscally responsible and cut off (even slightly) all the redundant programs that have put this country 38 Trillion in debt.

The Dems are willing to cause great suffering as long as they believe it benefits them politically.

Hopefully, the Repubs will have the guts to stand firm. They haven’t had a good track record in that just yet.

What happened to Doge?

no, hate to see the tradition go but the longer this goes on, the more I'm open to the idea. Maybe if the Democrats thought it could happen, they'd give a little. But the GOP are lazy - at least make them filibuster if they won't end it. The Democrats almost did, except they couldn't get Sinema and Manchin on board. But they're both gone now...

Wouldn't it be ironic if services to CONGRESS were the first to end when the budget expired?
No Congressional Pay.
No Staff.
No Protection.
No Heat, Water or Electricity to the Capitol.

... Sorry, but the Government simply has no money to provide these "non-essential" services. ;)

[Then I wonder how long the shutdown would last?]

They need to be forced to supply and balance a budget.

We need term limits other than our votes.
They need a pay cut and no retirement.
Forced to live in their districts /state 1/4-1/2 of the year.
And Much much more
