I don't know, but this might explain it....

If you consider it sport to gather your food by drilling through 18 inches of ice and sitting there all day and hoping that the food will swim by, you might live in Minnesota.

If you're proud that your state makes the national news 96 nights each year because International Falls is the coldest spot in the nation, you might live in Minnesota.

If you've ever refused to buy something because it's "too spendy", you might live in Minnesota.

If your local Dairy Queen is closed from November through March, you might live in Minnesota.

If you instinctively walk like a penguin for five months out of the year you might live in Minnesota.

If someone in a store offers you assistance, and they don't work there you might live in Minnesota.

If your dad's suntan stops at a line curving around the middle of his forehead, you might live in Minnesota.

If you may not have actually eaten it, but you've heard of lutefisk you might live in Minnesota.

If you've worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you might live in Minesota.

If you have either a pet or a child named "Kirby", you might live Minnesota.

If yuor town has an equal number of bars and churches, you might live in Minnesota.

If you have a lenghty telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number, you might live in Minnesota.

If you know how to say Wayzata, Mahtomedi, Edina, and Shakopee, you might live in Minnesota.

If you grew up thinking rice was only for dessert, you might live in Minnesota.

If you think that ketchup is a little too spicy, you might live in Minnesota.

A muslim quoted I Corinthians 9:22 to me as proof that the Bible instructs Christians to lie in order to convert.

His interpretation appears to be as valid as yours -- opinion only.

Not a red herring. Off topic response to a specific statement. I do apologize for being off topic for a moment.

Whats all the fuss here? Taking your oath on a Bible is a man-made tradition, not supported by the Bible or the Constitution. The United States, like every other nation on the face of the earth is a secular state.

If a Christian can choose or not choose to take his oath a Bible why should a Muslim not be afforded the right to choose the Koran? Would you all rather have him mock the word of God by falsely swearing on it? There are already far too many politicians doing that every election. At least this man has the guts to admit that he does not accept the authority of God's word, unlike the vast majority of liars and deceivers who use the Bible as nothing more than a political prop.

He should be acknowledged as having the right to use his book in swearing. But if I lived in that district and had any consideration of running for that seat in the next election, I would make certain photos and tapes, including closeups of his face and his Qaran, are available to use in my campaign.

Actually, I am wrong here of course, there are religious states, but would you want to be part of one?

    Koran in the Congress

Another good example of: the enemy is in the camp. Satan will not go down without a fight.

    Now what?

    Choose wisely,

Ellison will take the oath of office without his hand on either the Bible or koran, just like every other Congressman.

IMO, they should swear on the Constitution they are pledging to defend. They should also read it...apparently most have not.

I suppose that we cans also argue as to which version of the Bible should be used for a swearing in ceremony. Is just any old Bible good enough?
Would the New World Translation be adequate? What about the Ghetto Ebonics Version? The King James? NIV? Anton Levay's Satanic Bible? Is this a slippery slope?

    Greetings 777:

    Welcome to the board!

Okay, but what exactly does that mean?

That doesn't really mean anything. What if a Christian was in a Muslim country, and was compelled to take the oath of office while placing his/her hand on the Bible? If the person feels that the oath means more by placing his/her hand on the Koran, then more power to them. They were elected to represent the district.

That is not for him to prove or disprove. Glenn Beck interviewed Ellison and made an inexcusable statement to him.

    http://mediamatters.org/items/200611150004

Now, if you were a Muslim American, and you watched this program, imagine how that would make you feel. Beck asked Ellison to prove that he is "not working with our enemies." What was the basis for this question? Was it a known tie to the enemies? Was it a result of statements that seemingly implied that he was anti-American? No, the reason his patriotism and/or allegiance was called into question was simply his religious affiliation.

Glenn provided a lesson to all of us with his egregious statements: if you are compelled to insert a statement that you mean "no offense" when you are making a statement or asking a question, then you probably shouldn't make that statement or ask that question......

Remember: in this country, we are innocent until proven guilty. This whole prove your innocence accusation is anti-American. It was when McCarthy did it to numerous people, and it is now. Questioning one's patriotism simply as a result of one's religion (or lack thereof) is wrong.

Again, a sincere welcome to the board. I trust that you and yours are doing well on this beautiful Sunday,
    BiR

This would never happen. But if you meant to say Quran, that would never happen, either.

    Greetings LadyEagle!

No, I meant the Bible. If you are correct in your observation, wouldn't that further reinforce the differences between us and them? In our country, we have the liberty to use our religious texts to take our oaths of office. I for one am proud to live in a country like that.

Hope you and yours are well in Tennessee (I was just there a week ago),
    BiR

We have atheists in Congress, as well as Mormons and Jews and Christians. One more religion is unlikely to shake the foundations.

Oh, the foundations are already gone, so there is nothing left to shake.

Doing well, BiR. Thanks. Have a Merry Christmas.
