Obama authorises Iraq strikes to protect Christians, prevent 'genocide'

I am sure Christian Obama haters will find a way to criticize him.

U.S. President Barack Obama authorised air strikes on Iraq to protect Christians and prevent "genocide" of tens of thousands of members of an ancient sect sheltering on a desert mountaintop from Islamic State fighters threatening to exterminate them.

In Baghdad, where politicians have been paralysed by infighting while the state falls apart, the top Shi'ite cleric all but ordered Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to quit, a bold intervention that could bring the veteran ruler down.

The United States began to drop relief supplies to refugees from the ancient Yazidi sect, but there was no sign yet of air strikes, which Obama authorised for the first time since pulling troops out in 2011.

Absolutely the right move.

Wonder if he was looking at his Nobel Peace Prize as he issued the order?

I am generally a noninterventionist, and I certainly don't hold the current president in high regard, but the US needs to bomb those ISIS bastards to hell for the genocide they are committing.

I wonder what took him so long? Fear of criticism--"I told ya so"--coming from the Republicans for his scheduled withdrawal a couple of years ago?

BTW, agree with the move, so long as we don't put troops back in Iraq.

It may be too little too late. Obama caused the problem in the first place. Why did the American people fall for a leftist radical with no experience and not much knowledge? Obama did not solve the race problem--he made it worse.

Of course it has to be the fault of a rightie or a leftie.

It can't be the fault of the righties and lefties being allied with countries like Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey that have been funding and arming the extremists from the get go.

I'm sure the invasion of Iraq which threw that country into chaos had nothing to do with it.

Not me...

I think we owe the people of Iraq our support. We dismantled their nation and left them toooooo soon. I also think like LBJ in Viet Nam we will get more involved.

Is this constitutional?

I spoke to this in a seperate thread. Long answer short: if we didn't intervene, it would be someone else committing genocide. Ie; Saddam.

How can you know that for sure? Did Saddam try to commit genocide against Christians in Iraq? Did he kill tens of thousands and displace a million plus Iraqis? Did he have allies supporting the Islamic extremists now attacking Iraq like Washington does?

What you say might sound like a good rational to the red white and blue warrior class but in the end it's a very weak justification based on personal opinion for violating the constitution Obama, congress and you swore to protect and defend.

"I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."

How is (if we didn't take out Saddam he maybe, could have, might possibly, someday cause his people more harm than we did by destroying their country, disbanding their military and unleashing the Islamic extremists now taking over Iraq by overthrowing governments like Lybia that kept them in check . . .) protecting and defending the constitution?

A little too late.

As usual in military matters, he is indecisive and slow to act.

Any CiC worthy of the name would have seen this coming and hit those muslim fanatic killers long ago.
