Obama administration officials warned Wednesday of dire consequences for the U.S. military if Congress cannot avert scheduled spending cuts, even as Republican lawmakers charged that President Obama has gone AWOL on the issue.
During another day in Washington marked by officials talking past one another, the Obama administration unveiled new details about the potential impact of roughly $110 billion in across-the-board cuts starting Jan. 2. Half would be to the defense budget.

Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and the White House's acting budget chief, Jeff Zients, warned in a hearing that the Navy would be forced to purchase fewer ships and soldiers going to war would receive less training.

Meanwhile, Republicans have hammered the administration for allegedly trying to "hide the ball" and make the cuts seem less devastating than they are.

Republicans point to two moves by the administration this week. First, the Labor Department advised federal contractors, including defense firms, that they don't have to warn workers about potential layoffs from the cuts -- though a law called the WARN Act mandates such notices go out 60 days in advance, which if followed would happen just before Election Day.

Then the White House budget office said the president would spare military personnel from the automatic cuts.

After the announcement, Republican senators accused the administration of "flailing around" in an attempt to make the massive cut "look less devastating than it actually is."

I generally say the Republicans are the "stupid" party. But in this instance they are smart. They have sense enough to know that trying what you suggest would start a race war. In any event the democrat Senate would never do anything!

As usual, a completely flawed conclusion. Why would the Republicans proceed with impeachment in the House and conviction in the Senate, when conviction requires a two thirds vote, and the Senate is controlled by the Democrats?

There is no way the Republicans are working with or for the Obama Administration. Both the Democrats and Republicans have in common not serving the American people, but do it independently of each other. They may be as crooked as the administration or not. You have nothing to back up the notion that Republicans and Obama are working together on this or any other issue. If they were, budgets would be passed, and work would be getting done. How do you come to the conclusions that you post?

I can vouch that this isn't exactly true. The Army is already going through cuts in personel. Across the Army, including the reserve units, we are looking at cutting up to 140,000 people.

Part of this will be through forcing out inferior soldiers who don't meet the new standards. Only the best soldiers are being allowed to reenlist now. Part of our counselings to soldiers now is where they stand on being able to reenlist, and what they need to do to be considered eligible for reenlistment. One may be a good solder, but good is not good enough anymore, you have to be a great soldier to stay in.

The second way is cutting people earlier than their contract ending date. If a person is withing a year of getting out, and they are not going to deploy, they are given the option of getting out early.

Hopefully it doesn't get to the point where we have to cut good soldiers who wish to remain in, but that remains to be seen.

Since WWII there have been those in the democrat party who wanted to gut defense. Now, with the aid of the Republican Party leadership [S/N's senior Senator], it appears they mey get their earnest desires!

To tack on to this: I haven't read the article, but the White House's statement about sparing the military is disengenuous. As we faced government shut-downs each year for the last few years, it's never been the military members who were told they were going to be forced to go home and be on unpaid leave; it's the Department of Defense civilians who face those lay-offs.

There's no mechanism in place for "automatic cuts" for military members themselves. However, the civilian corps (approximately 700,000 personnel) can--and will--be placed on unpaid leave, or laid off, as necessary (meaning, the uniformed types now have to do the civilians' jobs as well as their own).

Both parties have the same basic goal. To get elected. After that any promises made on the way go out the window. Once they sit in the oval office they are owned by the elite bankers and corporitos and they'll do whatever it takes to steal our wealth and give it to their masters.

The private global bankers own us all thanks to our "two" parties. Starting a third or fourth or fifth party is going to free us from this how? Voting for a republican is going to free us from this how? Go ahead start another party or two or three. The globalists own the mass media and they'll just do what they always do.
