Just when you thought that Obama couldn’t say anything more shocking than “you didn’t build that,” the president makes an extremely revealing statement about who decides the winners and losers in this country: “We don’t believe that anybody is entitled to success in this country.”
While this nation was built on freedom of opportunity, the point of view of those who oppose Constitutionally limited government is equality of results. That means in practice that if one works harder and tries to get ahead, even more will be taken from him or her by the government. Eventually, people give up trying to be successful, except through the corrupt means of influencing political decision-makers.
The idea that someone isn’t entitled to success, implicitly through the means of individual preferences expressed in a competitive market, is an anti-democratic and frankly perverse point of view that substitutes politics for economic reality. People should become successful based on hard work and initiative, and by offering goods and services in a market at prices customers are willing to pay.
