Obama picks retired general for help.

For once Obama sees he needs real help in fighting ISIL. He taps retired General Allen, a very good general, to head this non war thingofabob. It is an interesting choice considering all the active duty generals on staff. But it is a very good choice, even though it reeks of mothballs.

Great pick. I give him a 9 for this choice. What do you think? Is Obama realizing he needs help?

Question would be: why's he asking a retired general for help when he's got the Joint Chiefs of Staff and their analysts/advisors/experts of literally thousands?

So he goes to a retired general instead of his already available active duty military resource?

Am I seeing this wrong? Or does anyone else think there's something weird about this?

Here is why.

"John R. Allen, the retired Marine general who served as the top American commander in Afghanistan, has been picked by the Obama administration to coordinate the international effort against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, a senior administration official said Thursday.

The Obama administration has stressed the importance of building a broad international coalition to combat the militant group, and General Allen has long experience working with leaders in the region.

During the war in Iraq, General Allen served as the deputy Marine commander in Anbar Province, where he played an important role in strengthening relationships with Sunni tribes and nurturing the Awakening movement.

He later served as the deputy commander of Central Command, which oversees military operations in the Middle East. From 2011 to 2013, General Allen led the American and allied military effort in Afghanistan.

General Allen has also served as an adviser to Secretary of State John Kerry. He developed a security plan for the West Bank during Mr. Kerry’s unsuccessful effort to forge a comprehensive Israeli and Palestinian peace agreement."

Those seem like pretty relevant and topical credentials to me. I don't know what is so crazy about him being selected to do this. It isn't like he is some ancient relic from the Gulf War. He has considerable experience in our recent campaigns in the middle east.

I don't think the wannabe dictator will heed his advice when he needs to the most.

Didn't say he wasn't qualified or a good choice. Said it was weird that, when he has literally thousands of active duty (not retired) military personnel with the same experience and knowledge, and a JCS whose job it is to advise the president about such military matters, that the president decided he needed to use a retired military person instead.

Why wouldn't you use the available resources you already have?

Unless you don't trust them for some reason....

But there are not literally thousands of Generals with the same experience. He was the top General in Afghanistan, deputy commander in the Anbar province of Iraq and deputy commander of CENTCOM which oversees all of the middle east. He has relationships in both of those countries which others would not have. This kind of operation is almost tailor made for a guy like Allen.

Thanks for the GREAT info on General Allen?

He has gutted the core of great leaders by forcing them into retirement for not agreeing with him, and now he needs someone other than a "Yes man!" if he hopes to redeem himself and improve in the public opinion polls!

So you believe he's more qualified than anyone currently serving?

Obeyme himself is not qualified. So no matter who he picks, that candidate will resign in disgust after dealing with a stone-cold, heartless, spineless, inept non-decision maker . That's why Mrs. Clinton left. General Allen may be great, but his new boss is NOT.

There is a giant disconnect between the Chief Commander and his generals. Some have been retired willingly or not.

The accolades from the demise of Bin Laden are getting pretty thin.

It is difficult to imagine the possibilities of success of a U.S. led coalition of followers of Allah. When push comes to shove, these people really hate us and what we stand for. We seem to have failed to dismantle the terrorists in Afghanistan after spending many lives and billion$.

The terrorists understand one thing: a quick trip to 14 vestal virgins.

Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

Kind of. Can you name an active duty General with more experience? Ray Odierno was running Iraq when I was there but he is the Army Chief of Staff now.

24 season four comes to mind: A President enlisting outside help when the task seems to be too much for him. I do not know what to think about it, but strikes me as odd also.

Always glad to see a marine in charge but I guess that a lot of it has to do with whom the Democrats prefer. I doubt if they intend to do much other than bomb. Can you see any nation send troops in so that 0bam@ does not have to send in more Americans--I can't either. 0bam@ is very unpopular overseas. He openly hates the Brits, the Germans don't want to listen to him anymore, and the French see him for what he is--weak.

I highly doubt selecting Allen is a political move as Allen has spoken against Obama's decision to leave Afghanistan. Allen is highly respected by both political parties as well as his peers.

As for the rest, I have no idea what you are talking about.

Because it is not complimentary toward Obama?

No because it just doesn't make sense. The Germans don't listen to him anymore? When have the Germans ever listened to U.S. politicians? The French think he is weak? It would be nice to have a few linked articles or something for context. Unpopular overseas? Newsflash, Americans in general are unpopular overseas.
