Obama spent $3.5 million on Hawaii Christmas vacation?

Does it bother you, as a taxpayer, that this president spends lavishly for his vacations? Especially when most Americans can't afford a few days away every other year?

Can someone explain why a president gets to spend this kind of money? I think except for the cost of secret service, the president should fund any vacations out of pocket. This goes for Bush, Clinton, Reagan and Carter, etc.

Doesn't bother me at all. Any president deserves vacations. Obama has taken far fewer vacation days than his predecessor.

Troy, let's have the quantities on that. Or the number of days or hours.

Certainly.

From the linked article in the OP (you do READ the linked articles, right? You could also read the FactCheck.org article I linked to.)

Obama does not take an extraordinary amount of vacation time.

He’s taken 23 vacations spanning all or part of 177 days, according to Mark Knoller, a CBS News White House correspondent who maintains an authoritative record of presidential activities.

By comparison, President George W. Bush at this point in his tenure had made 68 visits to his Texas ranch spanning all or part of 441 days, and 10 visits to his family’s home in Kennebunkport, Maine, spanning all or part of 39 days, according to Knoller.

Also, Bush spent over 400 days at Camp David and they do not count as vacation days. So rounding down to 800 days comes to almost three years. When you add the days he spent at their home in Kennebunkport, Maine, it come to just about 3 years.

Obama has spend less than 50 days at Camp David.

According to nationalreport.net, Obama has outspent Bush by $71 million for his and/or his family's vacations. Maybe that says something about how he handles inflation if he spends that much more for that many less days; that plus the 85% increase in school lunches I read about. Regardless, I think all these recent presidents are abusive of the taxpayer's dollars. Nevertheless, having one's own place in the 48 at which to get away is a help in that way. Why doesn't he go to Chicago instead of Hawaii? (he's already fitting out a mansion in HI, according to one report)

Just recently when his wife was at Nancy Reagan's funeral obamo was in Austin TX for some music thing opening. Then we were allowed to pay for his wife to return to Austin to close the thing. That is using our money in a good way...NOT

To me I see a big difference between going to your home, and just jetting around on the taxpayers dime. Do these figures show how much is paid to fly the wife, and kids around when he isn't with them?

He’s taken 23 vacations spanning all or part of 177 days, according to Mark Knoller, a CBS News White House correspondent who maintains an authoritative record of presidential activities.

So obamo has taken an average of 3+ vacations a year with an average of about 7.5 days, all fully paid for by his employer, including the extra security required.

If obamo chooses not to go to Camp David (or maybe the wife won't let him go) that is on him, and I don't see where that has anything to do with his vacation time compared to others.

I think the problems arise from the fact that the current POTUS hails from Hawaii. The distances (and therefor the price) involved for moving the required support equipment and personnel are just that much greater that setting up the same operation in Texas or California.

That may be partially true, but what president in the past century had his daughters invite their classmates along on vacations, and paid the bill? This is misuse of taxpayers money! That money could go to so many better things to help Americans!

Other than food, how would having a few friends add to the cost; and how do you know that it is at taxpayer expense?

I think that you are stretching things with this one.

RIGHT WING MYTH. It is a well known fact that taxpayer money is NOT used for folks on these trips. If they are invited to go along, they have to pay just as they would for a regular vacation. Otherwise Presidents pay for their own and their families’ lodging, food and incidentals while on vacation.

This is primarily why they vacation at homes they own or at places that are owned by friends or at Camp David.

So it's not a misuse of taxpayer money. It's the President's money coming out of HIS pocket. And like you, he can use it however he chooses.
