Washington (CNN) -- President Obama will ask Congress Wednesday night to repeal the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy that bars gays and lesbians from openly serving in, White House Senior Adviser David Axelrod told CNN.
The request will be included in the president's State of the Union address, Axelrod said.
The issue has been a source of contention for heavy hitters on both sides of the issue, who are lining up for a fight.
In a message to Pentagon leadership, Gen. John Shalikashvili, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said it's time to repeal the law.
"As a nation built on the principal of equality, we should recognize and welcome change that will build a stronger more cohesive military," said Shalikashvili. His letter was sent out Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-New York, who supports repealing the policy.
House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, flatly disagreed with the idea of ending it.
"When it comes to 'don't ask don't tell,' frankly, I think it's worked very well. And we just ought to leave it alone," he said to reporters Wednesday morning.

and remember when homosexu@als are allowed to serve openly in the military, and they were "married" in a State or Commowealth that allows such, they will be authorized under military regulations to occopy goverment family housing quarters. The Army will be required to ship thier "spouse" to overseas assigments and ect.

I'm complaining because they will have to give them housing to live together, and cover the 'partner' for health insurance, all on my tax dollar. Christians paying tax will be paying homose*uals to live together, but some don't mind paying for abortions so I'm sure they won't find a problem with this either.

It is claimed that it costs $100K/year to put a pair of American boots on the ground in a foreign war. George Washington did not object to having foreign troops fighting with him. Maybe we could lease Chinese troops for $25K/year and save trillion or so a year. Japanese cars, Chinese troops, what's the difference?

An all-volunteer armed forces costs alot more than a conscription army. The alternative is to bring back the draft, but you wouldn't like that. In fact many countries around the world have seen how much more effective the US & UK volunteer armies are and have asked help in establishing their own.

There have always been gays in the military and there always will be. When I was in Germany in the army many years ago there were two fellow in the company I was a part of. The company commander learned of them. He called them into his office and told them he would give them a room together. He did not care what they did in their room. But if they ever bothered anyone else that they were grass and he was a lawnmower.

I think we should bring back the draft. A few years in the military makes a person appreciate their civilian life and life in the US much more. Also it adds some discipline to many young lives at a time when they really need it.

Very patriotic of you. [yes I am being cynical.] Let someone else do our dirty work. Just don't let it touch me personally. Give me my freedoms but at no cost to me or those I love.

er, you see, if you've ever heard of the doctrine of low intensity conflict, that is exactly what the US have been doing since last century, wherever they have interests (economic or military) that they need to protect.
