JFK's voting record and how much he was absent for votes while a senator. JFK had said if his party didn't back him, he was going to back Nixon. And then all the mess about how he got in with help from W.Va., Daily, Hoffa and the mob. His playing around made Clinton look like a good kid. And if one takes time to read one will find out he wasn't making many happy and that is why he went to Texas to try and get Senator Yarborough's backing.

The 1960 election was stolen by the democrats in Illinois, Texas, and South Carolina, perhaps Missouri. JFK did two things of merit: cut taxes and stood up to Russia over the missiles but on this he really had no choice.

His biggest mistake was was backing down at the Bay of Pigs. Now Florida is the stateside Cuba so perhaps whoever is talking about Florida seceding is on to something.

You are correct. And Reagan was only about 10% or so more conservative than JFK. I almost didn't vote for Reagan due to his backing of JFK and he had said FDR was his political hero. It is why I say Reagan wasn't a conservative but a liberal, but not by today's standards but by the standards that I grew up with and still believe for the most part.

You are wrong about Reagan. A lot of people were conned by FDR but not my family. The democrats talked about the "Hoooover Times" for years. I believe that even Al Gore brought it up in 2000. It is only recently that it has been pointed out that FDR's tax and spend Socialist policies prolonged the Depression until he got us involved in WWII.

As much as my dad disliked President Truman, he loved Truman's remark that JFK had his ear so close to the ground to see what people wanted and were saying, that JFK's ears were full of grasshoppers. And for the record I believe Truman conservative than Reagan.

Truman was not a conservative. He had one accomplishment that turned him from a mediocre president into one who will be recognized as a great president. He used the A-Bomb to bring WWII to a close. In this he showed more guts than any recent president other than Reagan who brought down the Soviet Union.

I have heard, but can't be sure, that FDR did not make Truman aware of the A-Bomb. He learned about it after FDR died in Ga. with his live in mistress.

But where was it that he pulled back our missiles to please Russia, my mind is failing me on that.

I don't know about his biggest mistake, but we are still paying for it today.

We will disagree over this one. He is the one who backed JFK and said FDR was his hero.

I didn't say he was a true conservative but I think he was more so than Reagan or JFK or FDR. Like or dislike him, he did have guts.

I have heard, but can't be sure, that FDR did not make Truman aware of the A-Bomb. He learned about it after FDR died in Ga. with his live in mistress.

From my reading FDR didn't care for Truman and had little to do with him but Truman thought FDR was great. I've read the same thing about the A-Bomb as you have.

We knew what we would get if we voted for him and now we are geeting it. All one needed to do was read about him, it was all out there. The american voter has spoken and we are getting what they voted for.

I don't care for what we are could be getting but more of our fine folks wanted him than any of the others, so now it looks as if we might have to pay for it, thats life.

Joe the Plumber was smart enough to know what Obama was. Why were a majority of the voters so stupid?

I thought it was Turkey but couldn't be sure so: Several paragraphs down.

It also turns out that Kennedy made a secret deal to end the Cuban missile crisis. Contrary to JFK's and his associates' public statements during and well after the crisis, the president had secretly agreed to remove 15 Jupiters (intermediate-range ballistic missiles) from Turkey in exchange for Khrushchev's promise to remove 42 medium-range-ballistic missiles from Cuba. In the 1960s and well afterward, Kennedy aides simply denied that there had been such a formal quid pro quo. In denying that deal, they lied to Congress, to the American people, and even to Johnson, JFK's successor.

It is a shame that our elected officials don't try some genuine health care reform that would really help. It could be done in a few pages.

1) People should not be turned down for preexisting conditions. This is just only fair. The details would have to be worked out to insure people don't just wait until just before a major expense and then try and get insurance just for that reason.

2) Insurance companies should not be allowed to drop people or raise their rates so high that in effect are doing just that.

3) Hospitals should have to have one charge for a service, and there should be some way of people comparing them beforehand.

4) People should be allowed to buy insurance from any company in any state and in a an ala carte manner.

5) There needs to be some type of tort reform.

6) Schools need to go back to having more PE. With all the money that is wasted with our education budget, they need to figure out how to do this without adding to the budget, but rather by making cuts in waste.

7) They need to create some type of focus group assigned to just think out side the box to generate future ideas that would lower cost without raising taxes or involving the government in providing our health care.

I agree. There are no standards today, and the Democrats and Republicans are basically liberal anti-Constitutional allies that control 100% of the power.

Reagan appears conservative, and for the most part he is, compared to the Republicans that followed, Bush the First, Bush the Second, and McCain. The biggest mistake Reagan made was picking Bush for his VP. Had he picked someone else, that would have spared this nation both Bushes.

Truman is probably the most solid President in my life time, along with Reagan. Since 1988, and President before that (except Carter) is light years ahead of anyone after.

As far as JFK goes, his policies were moderately conservative compared to today. I also agree with you that the whole episode of the way the Kennedy family gained power is rotten to the core.

As I said before, the thing that scares me most about health care reform is not the cost, but the idea of the government running it, when they cannot get a letter across town in three days.

Thanks my friend. Yes it was Turkey.

The other is so true. I know down here in Florida the Republican party wasn't much back then, but they , the conservative democrats, what was left of the southern democrats, John Birch Society and a few others were saying what he did, but for the most part the country or congress didn't believe it or check it out well. I'll try and use your memory again, who was the newspaper columnist who was pushing it. He came up with a lot of so called dirt on politician folks and most folks and writers didn't buy it but years later we would find out he was correct. Was it Pearson or Parson or Anderson? I'm not sure who it was.

I agree with you for the most part on this. However I find the problem starts in our schools, from first grade through college. Our leadership I believe is a direct reflection of what we are or the ones who vote. We(not all of us) as a country wants something given to us, our form of government won't work that way, if we all have our hand out. Due to our education we(so many) look to the government for help, it has replaced family, friends and church. Where are the statesmen?

I agree with you my friend. However his son, Jeb, down here in Florida was a good governor and rather conservitive for this day and time.

Truman is probably the most solid President in my life time, along with Reagan. Since 1988, and President before that (except Carter) is light years ahead of anyone after.

Except for fireing Macarthur, he was better than any president in my life time. I enjoy reading his quotes not as good as Churchhill but good.

Yes but by the times of the 60's he was rather liberal. Our entire country has moved to the left and we are paying for it. You liked Truman to a point, look up his views of JFK, some good reading.

As I said before, the thing that scares me most about health care reform is not the cost, but the idea of the government running it, when they cannot get a letter across town in three days.

I agree again. But when you want someone else to pay for you, you don't seem to care.
