Obamacare -- Out of Pocket Costs

There seems to be a lot of information on Obamacare and much of it seems to be designed to confuse people by pushing both the pro and con side.

So far I have not found much on what the actual cost will be for families.

Thus far I have found:

Cost to average family per year, $878.47 per year. If this is actuate it is far less than I pay just for my Medigap insurance.

This comes from: http://www.mygovcost.org/2012/06/30...es-of-obamacare/comment-page-1/#comment-24136

I also found the following:

Based on your income, your annual premiums for that plan would be no more than $1,600 to $2,520. Your maximum out-of-pocket costs for deductibles and co-payments would be capped at 15 percent of the total cost.

http://www.godlikeproductions.com/forum1/message1910922/pg1

Even if the 2520 is accurate it is still less than we have to pay for our current Medigap.

Have others checked into the costs and compared?

The only thing for sure is that if you've already got insurance your out-of-pocket costs will go up.

http://money.cnn.com/2012/06/28/pf/health-care-reform-insurance/index.htm

Out-of-pocket expenses means health care costs unrelated to monthly premiums and basically means expenses like prescription drugs and office visits. Out-of-pocket expenses will vary from one person (or family) depending on how many times they need to go to the doctor.

So far as I know, Obamacare won't affect out-of-pocket costs, except that there is now one preventative care doctor visit per year that is free. However, patients should be aware that any discussion of health issue beyond the listed items in a preventative care visit will cause them to incur out-of-pocket expenses.

You may be right you may be wrong. I have not found information on that aspect yet. If you have and it shows numbers and not political opinion I would really like to have the links so I can research that.

My understanding is that the prescription doughnut hole will end and that will reduce costs for some.

I will do some more and see what I can find. But it appears my premiums will be much less ... time will tell.

Obama has been using his slush fund stash to prop up Medicare until after the election.

Millions more will be going on Medicare due to Obamacare and after the election funding for Medicare continue downward.

What difference does it matter what your "out of pocket costs" are if you can't get the medical services anyway?

Premiums are not the same as out-of-pocket expenses. If someone's monthly premiums go down it would only be because they are buying insurance from the new government insurance exchanges and the premiums are subsidized because of a qualifying income level. If you are buying health insurance through your employer your premiums won't go down and will probably go up 5% to 8% annually.

Actually all these numbers are not relevant. It is obvious from experience with Medicare that the initial estimated costs have no relation to actual costs. This monstrous 2700 page bill called Obamacare should be an affront to every citizen. This law is supposed to provide medical insurance for an additional 30,000,000 people and yet reduce costs. Insanity!!! Only the "mentally challenged" could believe that nonsense; but then there are the democrat legislators epitomized by Ms. Pelosi who cleverly said: "We have to pass the bill to learn what is in it".

The simple truth is that money does not grow on trees. It is either taken out of the taxpayer's or consumer's pocket or printed by the Federal Reserve, which amounts to the same thing. In the event that anyone is not aware: The consumer/taxpayer pays all costs. There is no "tooth fairy"!

Now I see CTB, that you have medigap insurance which indicates you are on Medicare and therefore subject to the diabolical "15 member Death Panel". Good luck! Hope you are in good health!

I seriously doubt that I am in any more danger than when I was younger and the insurance death panels made decisions. I jettisoned the belief that insurance companies had any real interest in my health long ago.

But that is another topic. Your comment on costs is interesting, but short on links supporting the idea. It is very hard to accurately forecast costs. Look at construction costs overruns, etc.

But, as I said, if the numbers I found are close to accurate my monthly premium costs will be much lower than now. Time will tell.

I looked at your links and the first one concerns new taxes under ObamaCare. The second link is to another forum and the numbers seem to be made up out of thin air.

Well our insurance started getting ready for Obamacare this year and the result was larger yearly out of pocket, new large deductibles, raised copays, loss of some elective surgery (knee replacement was one of the "electives".

Personally we can't afford any more of his money saving schemes.

Guess if they can make us buy health care they can declare higher costs are now lower costs.

FY!: Younger people are more resilient than old people CBT!

Not that it matters to you CTB but insurance companies that don't make money go out of business.

I don't have to provide links on Medicare costs. It is common knowledge that costs are at least 100-1000 times initial estimates. I am sure you can google or yahoo!

But, as I said, if the numbers I found are close to accurate my monthly premium costs will be much lower than now. Time will tell.

Don't get too optimistic CTB. The "death panel" is breathing down your neck even now.

Forgot to say, the premiums went up for the employer and we now have to pay part of it as well. Minor details :)

So how is the man able to sell this to the American public absent us being overrun by a bunch of myrmidons without a clue? How do you take money directly out of the pockets of middle class Americans yet sell it as helping middle class Americans?

If I were in med school, I'd be asking for my money back.

Let us not forget: There were people who thought Obama was going to buy their house for them, and give them a car (think they had a Volt in mind?), and more.

Now those same people are still believing that health care is free.

THAT's how you sell it. It's not a tax on everyone; it's a penalty on those who can afford it, but won't. Never mind that basically, everyone is expected to be able to afford it....

It was reported today on latest figures from the non-partison Congressional Budget Office (CBO) that 70% of the costs of obamacare will be born by people making under $100,000 per year.

Here are a few links to shed some light:

http://keithhennessey.com/2012/06/28/uninsured-tax/

And here are the "other" taxes hidden in obamacare:

http://www.businessinsider.com/here-are-the-new-obamacare-taxes-2012-7

I know people who could have retired at age 62 and started to collect SS early but didn't and are continuing to work full time for the healthcare through employers. If employers pull benefits, expect more Baby Boomers to start collecting SS and working part time to supplement income and get whatever they can get from obamacare. The incomes will be so low, it will be "free." There are several ways to skin the cat as they say and obama and the dems didn't count on the ingenuity of the American people. Look for businesses to lay off down to 49 employees, opening up a sister company with 49 employees, and another, and another. It will all be perfectly legal. Americans are ingenious. This isn't over yet and if it is, Americans will find a way around this, lol.

This is off-topic. The topic is out-of-pocket expenses under ObamaCare, i.e. office visits, lab work, prescription drugs, etc. You have linked to non-compliance tax rates for people that are not under a health insurance plan.

Why is this off topic - aren't hidden taxes out of pocket expenses? They are to me.

From what I understand the easiest way to curb this if you are fixed and low income is not take the insurance, pay the fine which is very low if at all for law incomers, and wait until you get sick and need serious medical attention and then sign up since they cannot refuse pre-existing nor charge extra for it.
