Obamacare: What if Catholic bishops aren't bluffing?

I was curious so did a little research. Just how many Catholic hospitals are in the US?

Well, I found this:

What if Catholic bishops aren’t bluffing?

<snipped>

The Catholic Church has perhaps the most extensive private health-care delivery system in the nation. It operates 12.6 percent of hospitals in the U.S., according to the Catholic Health Association of the U.S., accounting for 15.6 percent of all admissions and 14.5 percent of all hospital expenses, a total for Catholic hospitals in 2010 of $98.6 billion. Whom do these hospitals serve? Catholic hospitals handle more than their share of Medicare (16.6 percent) and Medicaid (13.65) discharges, meaning that more than one in six seniors and disabled patients get attention from these hospitals, and more than one in every eight low-income patients as well. Almost a third (32 percent) of these hospitals are located in rural areas, where patients usually have few other options for care.

<snipped>

Imagine the impact if these hospitals shut down, discounting the other 400-plus health centers and 1,500 specialized homes that the Catholic Church operates as part of its mission that would also disappear. Thanks to the economic models of these hospitals, no one will rush to buy them. One in six patients in the current system would have to vie for service in the remaining system, which would have to absorb almost $100 billion in costs each year to treat them. Over 120,000 beds would disappear from an already-stressed system.

The poor and working class families that get assistance from Catholic benefactors would end up having to pay more for their care than they do under the current system. Rural patients would have to travel farther for medical care, and services like social work and breast-cancer screenings would fall to the less-efficient government-run institutions. That would not only impact the poor and working class patients, but would create much longer wait times for everyone else in the system. Finally, over a half-million people employed by Catholic hospitals now would lose their jobs almost overnight, which would have a big impact on the economy as well as on health care.

I was unable to find out how many Baptist hospitals are in the US, but there are a lot of them, too.

So, imagine if all of these hospitals and their other healthcare facilities shut down because of Obamacare focing them to provide abortions, abortifactants, contraceptives in their health inurance policies for their employees.

People who are FOR the obamacare TAX plan need to think things through. In addition to doctors leaving the medical profession, possible shortage of medications (already some anesthesia medications are in short supply in hospitals), and the possible shutting of hospital doors due to obamacare, where will people get care? And the thousands of employees working at these institutions will be joining the unemployment lines.

Not only that, but hospitals are little cities within cities. Not only the employees would be jobless but all those businesses who provide goods and services to these hospitals would be affected, as well.

Something to think about.....THIS IS A MAJOR DISASTER for our nation. Healthcare is between 1/5 and 1/6 of our economy!!!

If I were a betting man, I would not wager against the Catholic Church. They don't bluff.

They will not shut down. I continue to be surprised at how many cannot see all this for what it is. This is all smoking mirrors by both parties. The republicans will now fight  for an exemption for those who oppose certain aspects on religious grounds and win and make it look like they got something for their followers. They already know this is never going to be repealed but some changes will appease. Even Mitt Romney knows this will not be repealed. Just listen to his words very carefully when he speaks about repealing it. Both parties are in bed with one another. All this wrangling is a smoke screen for election purposes. Just look at the wrangling they did over Holder and asked for charges to be filed against him when they knew full well that it could not happen since the President already covered for him. This health care law is the same thing, political wrangling and it is not going away so get ready for it and used to it.

You must not know much about non profit, especially very large, national ones.

Interesting.

Most people are not aware that Blue Cross/Blue Shield is a "non profit" operation. There must be a reason they run with the wolves of wall street ...the insurance industry, Known by Obamanites as the downright evil purveyors of healthcare.

They would never give up the cash cow. The religion thrives on money. Complete bluff.

When Illinois, Massaachusetts and DC siad that adoption agencies had to place children with gays the Catholic agencies closed down rather than comply.

Adoption agencies aren't "cash cows" too?

The Catholics weren't bluffing then - why would they be bluffing now?

I don't believe they are bluffing.

You forget, a large number of Catholics always vote Democrat. It would not be surprising to me for Baptist Hospitals to cave before Catholics. Catholics have been the most outspoken about this.

Not all non-profits can be lumped together.

Cash cows to be sure. Someone needs to come up with a different milking machine. The Clinton admin. had similar problems with healthcare in 92. They finally kind of gave up. The Fed cannot afford social medicine, even with deficit spending. The cash cow "grass" is dried up and the udders are dry as well. Marijuana makes them sick, but it is still the biggest cash crop in California, another bankrupt state.

We got trouble--right here in River City.

Not sure about the cash cow in the archdiocese. Many of them are broke, having paid considerable hush money, restitution and fines for the actions of certain clergy. Some bishops have had to sell church property to help recover lost revenue--much to the chagrine of the parish. There is a lot of "book cooking" going on--at every level of "accountability".

Who will pay for all the MRI's. We need a redistribution of red ink.

What is in your wallet?

Even so, come Lord Jesus.

P.S. Non-profit is a misnomer. Most everyone is in it for the money. "The love of money is the root of all evil', the apostle Paul.

I sure if yoou looked into the numbers from the adoption agency compared to the hospitals there would be no comparison. Closing the agencies don't hurt...hospitals will.

Its like those who take a hard stance on boycotting JCPenney due to their homo advertising....yet wouldn't dare do the same with their nice shiny iphone, ipad or apple computer. One would hurt, and its not the one you buy underwear at twice a year.

Catholic Bishops reject SCOTUS ruling on obamacare

America’s Catholic Bishops rejected the Supreme Court’s ruling that Obamacare is constitutional, saying the court did not resolve the question of the law’s violation of religious rights.

The bishops earlier in June led 43 Catholic institutions to file lawsuits against the Obama Administration, which under Obamacare is forcing Catholic and other religious institutions to provide health insurance to employees that covers contraceptives, sterilizations and abortion-inducing drugs against the Church’s moral teachings.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius — a Catholic who has been ordered by her archbishop not to take Communion until she repents of her pro-abortion stance and goes to confession — has ordered most employers to begin complying with the order on Aug. 1. In a nod to the churches, and probably a bid to help Obama’s re-election chances among Catholics, Sebelius has agreed to give religious nonprofits an additional year to comply.

Having filed a lawsuit does not necessarily mean a decision in favor of the plaintiff. It takes a long time to get before Judge Judy. It is extremely difficult to successfully sue the government--they have too many strings, special interest groups and delay tactics--also a certain diplomatic immunity and executive privelege.

Peace,

Anyone can choose to opt out of the health care law. Then they have to pay a tax. However under IRS regulations religious organizations are exempt for being taxed so the catholic organizations should not have to pay the tax wne they opt out of the health care law.
