In a halloween thread, there was this quote by SFIC:

standingfirminChrist said:
That child may not be promoting the sins that the Biblical character commited, but that child is guilty of one thing for sure...

Hypocrisy!

What is a Hypocrite? A pretender; a false professor; insincerity. The Greek word hypokrites referred to a play actor who wore a mask to represent an identity other than his own.

A parent who allows his or her child to wear masks depicting them of being or representing anyone other than who that child actually is, is condoning hypocrisy in that child.

A couple of other folks chimed in and agreed, yea indeed, acting is bad...

av1611jim said,
It is (as someone already mentioned) hypocritical to pretend to be someone you are not...Folks PRETEND to be something or someone they are not and then make a party out of it, mocking God's holiness.

This is flat out evil for a 'christian' to be a party to.

Rufus1611 said,
Therefore, when you are watching a play or a movie or television you are watching hypocrites. When you dress up your child in a costume representing something they are not, you are training them up to be hypocrites.

BUT THEN, just a few threads later, SFIC chimed in on a movie thread:

standingfirminChrist said:
The 'Thief in the Night' series can be purchased at this site: http://www.armageddonbooks.com/thief.html

So, sfic, if actors are hypocrites, and "pretending to be someone you're not" is an abomination, how can you recommend a movie? Aren't you, by your own actions, causing a brother to sin?

You can't have it both ways.

A hypocrite, according to scripture, is someone who wears a "mask" of righteousness.
Matthew 15:7-9
7 Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying:
8 ‘ These people draw near to Me with their mouth,
And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.
9 And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments
of men.'

While trying to define hypocrisy as someone who wears a mask or acts. SFIC demonstrates the real definition of hypocrisy by saying that actors are engaged in the sin of hypocrisy and then recomending a movie for people to watch.

Hyprocrisy pretending to be more holy then you really are. Thanks for the demonstration of hypocrisy SFIC.

SFIC if actors are hypocrites and hypocrisy is a sin then by advertising a websight to buy movies dont you become a peddeler of sin?

Or a legalistic 'Self-righteousness' in pretense. I believe that Paul speaks of that in Gal. 2:11-21.
11 Now when Peter[a] had come to Antioch, I withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed; 12 for before certain men came from James, he would eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision. 13 And the rest of the Jews also played the hypocrite with him, so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy.
14 But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all, “If you, being a Jew, live in the manner of Gentiles and not as the Jews, why do you[b] compel Gentiles to live as Jews?[c] 15 We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles, 16 knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.
17 “But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is Christ therefore a minister of sin? Certainly not! 18 For if I build again those things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. 19 For I through the law died to the law that I might live to God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. 21 I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain.” (Gal. 2:11-21 - NKJV)
To my knowledge, (although I could be wrong here, not having studied it in any semblance of depth) this is the only time that hypocrisy is specifically associated with saved people in the NT, and isn't it astounding that is is connected to some pretense of "keeping the Mosaic law", as opposed to one supposedly taking advantage of 'free grace'? Just as those Jesus accused of hypocrisy and/or branded as hypocrites were fastidious about keeping the law (as long as it benefitted them, you understand)! Is there a message here?

You have spoken well, Amy! rbell, you have hit the nail dead center with your head, as well, as showing the idiocity of some of this, carried to its logical end.

Any Christmas pageant or Easter pageant, any choir in robes in a cantata, any minister who wears a 'clerical robe', absolutely any program on any TV station, that is not news or sports live, the movies such as "The Ten Commandments". "Ben Hur", "The Gospel Blimp" or "The Passion of the Christ" (title?), any of the "Left Behind" series, which are portrayed as movies with a 'Christian' slant- how about any writer of and/or any book of 'Christian fiction'? Where do you draw the line? And suppose, for the sake of argument, I never did any of these, but was a friend of someone who did- How about that 'second degree of separation'? Third degree? Is it okay if it's only 'fourth degree'?

Frankly folks, THAT'S hypocrisy! And Jesus basically said so!

Ed

I think this whole thread as well as the Hallowe'en thread demonstrate how perectly good doctrine is turned into mockery, and why so many good people look unkindly on the fundamentalist churches.

It is high time we learned to let common sense prevail on sidelines to scriptural doctrines and concentrate on the real meaning of texts.

Cheers,

Jim

By the way, stage plays started in England where the church held plays to demonstrate the gospel of Jesus Christ.

I love Broadway plays and musicals....one good thing to come out of New York.

Cheers,

Is it ok to dress up like a Biblical character if we don't wear a mask? That way everyone knows who we really are... :tongue3:

Although, I dressed up as Gahazi one time (the leper), and even without a mask, my own mother wouldn't believe it was me.

God never said we couldn't have fun. In fact, He said:

A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.
Pro 15:13

All the days of the afflicted [are] evil: but he that is of a merry heart [hath] a continual feast.
Pro 15:15

A merry heart doeth good [like] a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
Pro 17:22

My kids have dressed up like Moses, Aaron the High Priest, Queen Vashti, Joseph, Mary, shepherds, angels, and many other characters while doing skits at church.

We don't stop having fun because we grow old. We grow old because we stop having fun...

I thought that if you had an issue with a brother that you were supposed to go to him privately.
Ye who are so good at flinging mud the first chance you get ought to re-read Matt. 18.

If pretending to be someone we are not is being a hypocrite, we all are...

Who actually uses their name for their screenname here on BB?

"tiny" is not exactly how I would describe myself, although it is wishful thinking!!! lol

I don't have an issue with SFIC at all. I'm not angry at him, and he has not offended me. I'm engaging in public debate--pointing out inconsistencies in his argument.

Furthermore, how am I "mudslinging" when I'm simply quoting your words? Look at post 1 again...

Here, I simply quoted you and a couple of other folks. That's not slinging mud--That's quoting. I seem to recall in a previous thread where you maligned my ministry and castigated the students whom I serve. It didn't seem to bother you to discuss that matter publicly. That's mudslinging.

On this debate board where we all signed up for the lone purpose of debating each other I am going to say that debate is fine and expected.

And Kubel is right. Have you thought about how ironic your post is. Did you come to each of us privately before you posted that. I did not get a visit from you.

I use my actual name, in shortened version, for my "screenname" on the BB, as I go by Eddie or Ed Sutton. Although I will plead guilty to allowing my alter-ego, Langauge Cop, make an occasional comment or post.

Other fairly well known members on the BB that I would guess use their 'real name' would include Barnabas J. Halo, one of the BB Administrators, Joseph_Botwinick, Ed Edwards, Tom Butler, and one that I am certain does, my own former 'BSU College Pastor' at Univ. of KY, Joseph M. Smith. Look at the members list; there are actually several who do use their real name, if in shortened version, as I do, and it is not particularly difficult to "round up the usual suspects".

Ed

P.S. When you figure out how to actually get the "tiny" from the "wishful thinking" department, into reality, :BangHead: , would you kiindly send me a PM, on how it's done? Thank you!
