Old Regular Baptist (revised)

Travail from nature to grace

This term is used by both sides of Old Regular Baptist it[the term] by itself is not found in scripture but travail is found several places, speaking of labor pain and tribulation, like Isaiah 66 or Jeremiah 30:6 the term from nature to grace comes from the Philadelphia or London Confession of Faith 1689 chapter 10 of Effectual Calling if you look at paragraph 1"Those whom God predestinated unto life,he is pleased in his appointed, and accepted time, effectually to call,by his Word and Spirit, out of that state of sin and death in which they are by nature,to grace and salvation by Jesus Christ;....." This confession is where the Union Association articles of faith were abstracted it is also the confession approved by the old line Primitive Baptist in 1900 it might be of interest of some people in Tennesee that several of the Elders who framed the Fulton address in 1900 where called Regular Baptist, it is from this group of Regular Baptist that we get The Thomas Hymnal by Elder E.D Thomas. The hardshell side believes that the travail is evidence that a person has been quickened, regenerated and taken from a state of nature and been made partakers of the divine nature by the purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began. Elder Slone

Bro Mike,

Didn't the Union Assoc of ORBs split several years ago over the "light of life"(or something close to this)? Don't some ORBs believe that one is saved at the end of the travail, while other ORBs believe one is saved at the start, and that the trail of repentance and deliverance is the "end result" of the travail? I have heard something similiar to this, but nothing in great detail. Any insights would be greatly appreciated! With love!!

The old school baptist side [Also called the hardshell or Primitive side] believe that man is dead until John 5:25 takes place then the dead man has life we call this regeneration, quickening, begotting, born again. The effect of this life is faith, repentance so we believe life is first, Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God....I John 5:1 also look at John 5:24 note the word hath everlasting life .The light is life doctrine is found in John chater one vs 4 if you have life you have light if you have light you have life for the life was the light of man.John 8:12.....the light of life. Christ /God is light would we say Christ is not life .Now there is gospel light that is a different topic.I hope that helps, I will not try and answer for the other side lest someone will take it and say ,look what he said or what he believes. No I don't believe in false doctrine, ,salvation is all of the Lord and not of man.Elder Slone

Brother Mike, I am glad to "see" you on here again. You must frequent here more often. I will not be able to attend, but let it be known, that I will be praying that God pours y'all out a blessing that can not be contain in all of Magoffin County. The time I was there in, I think 2007(?), I really enjoyed myself!! Even though I am of the FW flavor, I did hear the Word being preached! And that's all I need to hear, to make my day!! May God bless you and your whole family. Drop back in and let us know how the three days went, please.:wavey::thumbs::thumbs:

Elder Stone..... I surely wish I could attend this meeting but alas the Lord put me in the rolling hills of New Jersey. Ive been trying a church plant here with the PB's but they only appear to want to develop one in Manhattan & Im not interested. There is currently nothing / no presence of Old School Baptists here though I believe the Lord is calling me to do something about it. But Lord, at least give me something to work with.....Im content with what ever that is. :praying:

Blessing to all my brothers in Kentucky.

Brother Mike,

Does the SGA still have a working relationship/correspondence with the Northwestern Assoc. of PB's? I know they came in that saturday and I got to talk to some of them, but I had to leave and go home, so I missed out on that saturday afternoon meeting. They were really nice to me. One of them invited me to come to their church, and they would put me in the stand to see what I was made of(or something close to that), and I was thinking, they'd probably sing me down in less than five minutes LOL. But in all reality, I do believe I could preach in a way(if God blesses me to do it) that they would be in agreement. There is a lot of common ground at the foot of the cross, Brother Mike. There is a bond between God's people, that nothing can break.

Northwest Association

Convicted, good to hear from you again!! The Northwestern Association we had correspondence with[there are two Northwesterns] disolved, Elder Willie Mack Johnson the former moderator brought his membership to old Mt.Zion in Ada, Ohio at 93y.o he felt he could no longer Moderate or Pastor, there were no other ordained ministers in that Association, note that Elder George Haggans had a son that was a deacon in the Northwestern if I am not mistaken. We still maintain our relationships with those Associations, we now have direct and indirect correspondence with around 60,000 Old School Baptist. We our very happy with the old line Primitive Baptist Brothers. The Old Regular Baptist is/was a faction of the Primitive Baptist that split over Absolute Predestination of all thing including mans wickedness and actual Eternal Vital Union doctrine, however they began to drift into some arminianism and Fuller's atonement, if you took the old New Salem order on arminianism and applied it to those associations including Indian Bottom they would only have a handful of ministers left. That order was passed in 1892. other orders

I have been asked, what we think about other orders. We believe that God has an elect people that are through out the world and they may be among other orders or may have no local church. We ask that our ministers not preach directly with anyone , that we can not receive their work.We only receive baptisms performed by Old school Baptist. This does not mean,we are saying they are not children of God .We just feel it would be a double standard to take members who joined an order that has bad doctrine or practice an example would be the church of Christ group who teach salvation by water baptism, this is not the correct principle for one to be baptized under,We preach a doctrine that is different from the holiness or even the New School Baptist.I am free to preach where ever God in his wisdom would cast my lot but I would always hold prayer and separate my service from anyone not of our order, this we do even in funerals. We have allowed Brothers not in our correspondence to preach but we first closed out our meeting. This is done to see if they are in unity with us or it maybe we have never had any dealings with them.I feel we can better judge the matter that way.I believe we should be careful. The SGA churches are very welcoming of other orders who visit our meetings.I do not feel at liberty to answer for the softshell side of Regular Baptist but I have never witnessed them being mean to anyone of other faiths who visit them .I have many friends among them ,good brothers and sisters that I dearly love, but we can no longer walk together in a gospel way due to strong differences in doctrine, we hold to the old line Primitive view and they for the most part in this day and time reject it[not all].Should they return to the original Regular Baptist doctrine{historical} we would gladly embrace them. They have wonderful lined singing and keep many of the old ways.Brother Slone

Bro. Mike,

Your association has every right to do what y'all feel is right. I do not believe in infringing on your rights as a functioning body. I just don't get the "seperating out" when someone from a church/association not in their correspondence comes there, especially whenever it involves a funeral. Funerals are hurtful enough, and whenever someone has to close out their portion of the service with prayer, so that the other church/association can take over, would be confusing to many there, and maybe even hinder those who are lost. The IB does not seperate whenever, say a FWB preacher is called in the funeral, but the others, Old IB, Sardis, New Salem, NNS, Old Friendship, and Union do seperate whenever another non-corresponding preacher(s) is there at the funeral.

The IB also doesn't take members in by recommendation unless they were from an ORB assoc that they were in correspondence with at one time, either. When I left Salem in Sardis, and went to Little Jewell in IB, I went via recommendation because IB and Sardis at one time had been in correspondence with each other. Now, as for me, if someone required me to be re-baptized to take membership in their church/assoc, I'd just tell them to forget about it. I answered that on June 10,2007, when I was baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, and do not have to answer that again. To ask anyone else to do that just for membership is redundant. But, being an ORB, I guess I am in the minority concerning this. Like I stated, each church/assoc has every right to do things they way they feel led....I will not infringe on their rights.

i am I AM's!!

Bro Mike,

I really do hate to hear of any church/assoc closing their doors. Its a sad day when that happens.:( Aren't there some missionary baptist churches that y'all have a working relationship with? If I am not mistaken, some of the Missionary Baptists have a harder "shell" than others, if I am thinking right. One thing about it, if something happened and I could no longer find an ORB church to go to, I'd go to the PB's. Though I do not agree with their take on predestination, I find that they are more solid on the other parts of doctrine than about any other denomination I know of. Plus, the ones around here line their songs like the ORBs, and I do enjoy that very much!! :)

Do you seriously believe youd be accepted in a PB church?

Do you seriously believe you would be accepted in a PB church?

Yes sir I do!!! We which have been born again/born from above, love one another, and I believe that there is more than enough room at the foot of the cross. I, for one, would not push my beliefs on them, if I were led there. Church is a place for worship, and not for pushing one's beliefs on the church members. Now, if they chose not to take me in, I would leave without making a scene, and pray for them.

Let me clean this up a little better, Brother EW&F. I would like to think that I would be given the "right hand of fellowship" by my PB Brethern. Now, I would have to go around them for a while, listen to them preach, talk with them about the scriptures, etc. I wouldn't expect to just walk in off the street, go to one meeting, ask to take up membership, and they would just automatically take me in. In situations like this, both sides-the church and prospective member-should get to know one another better. This should be over a period of no less than six months. This way both sides know what they would be getting. I would like to think I could find enough common ground in God's Word to get along with anyone. Cleave to that which is good, and abhor that which is evil. I would rejoice at what we agreed with, and just set aside that which I don't agree with. Shoot, I don't agree with my fellow memebers at Little Martha, either. It's not about what we disagree on, but what we agree on.....too much in God's Word to agree on, Brother!!:thumbs::thumbs::thumbsup:

Bro. Mike,

What can you tell me about Mud River and Original Mountain Liberty? Are they still functioning? Bro. Keith Deel sent me a 2008 or 2009 minute and they were down to two churches then. I have heard through the grapevine that OML may have dissolved out. Is this true? If so, I would venture to guess the two remaining churches went into Bethel? Also, what associations are in correspondence with the SGA now? Please let us all know how the SGA association meetings went! I pray that God lifts y'all higher than the clouds, and that y'all shout till y'all can't shout any more!! I love you, Bro. Mike.

Bro. Willis,

The Mud River quit meeting as an association in the mid '90's. The Original Mtn. Liberty still has two churches and are still meeting as an association. The Bethel is certianly a possibility if our churches decide to dissolve the association.

Thank you, Bro. Keith, for this helpful info. I had read somewhere(maybe on here??) that Mud River was down to only one church. I am thankful that OML is still up and running. BTW, who is your correspondence now? I would imagine Bethel, and SGA for sure. Do you have any new correspondents? Love you Bro. Keith!!

The Mud River Split years ago, the side that Luther Ball Jr. is on no longer meets as an association, the other side has been isolated for years and I do not know if they are still meeting. Brother Mike
