Good evening,
I'm looking for some information and opinions on the Old Scofield Study Bible (Large Print edition).
Do you like it and would you recommend it ( and why).
I've heard about this study Bible for years but would like to get some knowledgeable opinions on it before invest in one.
Thank you for your help.
The old Scofield is the only Scofield that can be trusted. It will help teach the God ordained systematic theology that is so important to arrive at the right doctrines of the faith. Scofield highlights the two main features that one must understand to be well grounded in the faith and the mind of God. They are the dispensations of God and the covenants of God.
God's evangelism to the world is through the Jewish nation and is a New Testament gospel proposition called "the gospel of God," the theme of the NT, and described in the NT epistles. The divine principle of God's dealing with the world, both Jews and gentiles, in this age is by grace, but it is because of the faithfulness of God to keep his promise to Abraham in what we know today as the Abrahamic Covenant given to him in Gen 12 where he promised Abraham that though his seed (whom we know now as Jesus Christ, both the son of Abraham and the Son of God) that in him all the kindred of the earth will be blessed. This is the reason there is a gospel to the whole world after the cross of Christ, unlike before the cross of Christ.
The strength of the Old Scofield is in helping the reader see these great covenants of God and how he has providentially guided history to finally arrive through the last Adam what he had intended through the first Adam, a perfect earthly environment for a perfect people of God, world without end. Meanwhile we are left in open mouthed wonder at the wisdom and love of our God as we learn of his character and his ways throughout the scriptures.
Unteachable men who approach Bibles with preconcieved notions and who are unable to learn need not think the Scofield will help them any.
Note:
The first phrase that appears in the scriptures that is directly addressed to gentiles was written in 58 AD by the apostle Paul. He says this;
Rom 1:1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,
2 (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,)
He began this promise in the Abrahamic Covenant in Gen 12, and built on it after that. Here is the definition of the gospel of God in the same epistle, Romans.
24 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
25 Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel (
Paul calls the gospel of God my gospel because he is the apostle to the world of gentiles), and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,
26 But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:
27 To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen.
Ga 3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
The blessing of Abraham is that portion of the Abrahamic Covenant that promises salvation to the world through his greater seed, Jesus Christ.
I learned this by reading my Old Scofield and I thank God that my pastor gave it to me when I was 23 years old. It has been a blessing.
