Old time Bible Study

Psalm 95

What would have been the basic Bible study tools 1850? I am trying to understand and recreate a Bible study as it would have been done in the old days.

My guess would be (understanding that something important might not be included):

1. King James Bible

2. Cruden's Concordance

3. Matthew Henry's Commentary

4. Matthew Poole's Commentary

5. 1689 London Baptist Confession

6. 1833 New Hampshire Confession

What would your advice be?

Definitely the KJV.

I am not sure if a commentary would be used in the Bible study or not. I do not remember seeing a commentary in the little rural church I grew up in. My guess is only the pastor had a commentary of any kind.

The little Baptist church I grew up in was death on any confessions ... was too much like a creed for their blood. I do not know what they thought of the then Baptist Faith and Message, but it would not have been considered more than a simple listing of beliefs and would have carried no real weight in their minds and hearts.

KJV, for sure, prob a concordence if the person could afford it, maybe a prayer book, and possibly their church's statement of faith.

Bible is good enough for me.

Thanks for input. Do you have a suggestion on prayer book that might have been used?

Best Regards

So, I think we are down to:

1. KJV Bible

2. Cruden's Concordance

3. Church's statement of faith

4. Prayer book
