Does "only begotten son" mean something more than the obvious?
I seem to recall starting a similar thread a long time ago, but I don't remember what the comments were, so I figured I'd try again.
Didn't Abraham also have a begotten son named Ishmael? Yet, if I recall correctly, the Greek here is exactly the same as when Jesus is referred to as God's only begotten son. In fact, if I recall correctly, these exact words are only used in these two cases -- references to Jesus and Isaac. How is Isaac an "only begotten son" in the same way Jesus is the "only begotten son".Hebrews 11:17
By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son
